Sea Mosquito – Majestas

If done correctly, a little bit in any given direction is more than enough to completely transform a creation into a different beast altogether. It’s something that has long propelled any and all sorts of innovation across the board as musicians are always looking for their own little nooks and niches that they can call their own with it oftentimes the more outlandish approaches those that get the attention of the masses. Even then, however, weird and out-of-the-box is not all there is for a successful piece. We’ve seen plenty of interesting names come out of nothingness to try their hand at delivering such oddities in the form of psychedelic black metal, yet, understandably, few can measure up. With its second full-length offering, Sea Mosquito demands to be known as one of the very few who can bring such madness to life.

Of all the tricky pieces of the puzzle that come with the territory of psychedelia, I feel it’s the sheer endless possibilities that oftentimes overwhelm some musicians for where do you start or even end? It requires tact, stability, knowledge of your craft, and real artistic vision in order to balance everything properly and not allow things to become drowned out too easily. Having made a real name for itself in the vast realms of weird, Sea Mosquito has already proved itself more than capable of delivering such winding and writhing excellence with delectable black metal at the core, yet there’s something particularly potent about what’s been summoned throughout “Majestas”. Overflowing with religious themes that touch upon many of the societies of the world, it’s in pulling from all sorts of different influences that “Majestas” quickly takes on a life of its own and demonstrates an interwoven identity with the amorphous ideals of psychedelia that make this black metal all the more captivating and engaging right from the beginning. Looking upon mankind and divinity alike, it’s in the contrasting moments of calm amongst deplorable madness where “Majestas” truly shines. It showcases the vast repertoire that Sea Mosquito has made for itself over the years with it clear at practically every turn that this is one of the few bands that are definitely up to the task this style demands.

In an environment such as what we’re given with psychedelic black metal, it’s only a matter of time before we’re given a band that’s not only able to approach it all with the delicate but deliberate hand needed to prevent such a creation from becoming unruly, and it’s only natural that’s such acts are few and far between. For all of its many facets, Sea Mosquito’s constantly shifting sound is something that deserves recognition for all that it dares to be and all that it is when everything is said and done. There’s much to unravel throughout the whole of “Majestas”, but the question remains: how far do you dare go before your very psyche begins to unravel in turn?
