I’m not entirely sure what people are seeing or hearing whenever I come across someone that makes the claim that any form of new music isn’t worth the time for one reason or another with plenty leaning on “it was better decades ago”. I can only speak for the reaches of rock and metal music, but, quite frankly, I don’t see how one can look upon all that’s going on within these genres and feel like there isn’t loads to fall in love with every single year. It’s especially in the world of stoner rock that I find myself perplexed with such a view. I wonder what they’re seeing. Personally, while there are plenty of lackluster acts that pop up here and there, the quality as a whole feels downright overwhelming at times. As one of the more recent stalwarts of the sound, it’s with their forthcoming effort that Borracho puts forth a creation that can easily topple damn near anything any naysayer may have to spit out.
It goes without saying that there are tons of names out there is the vast scenes of stoner-related heaviness that have made quite a name for themselves in just the past decade. They’re the life and blood of the sound that keeps things fresh and interesting as the years pile on, but it’s the bulwarks that have long stood strong as the standards of the sound as whole that still command the scene as they help new talent find their footing even as they propel their own greatness. A foundational act that has yet to stagger or lose status for all that they bring to the table, Borracho only furthers its reputation with everything that it brings to the table throughout the seven sprawling riff-filled tracks of “Ouroboros”. Having long been in tune with their sound and on a recent string of dominating creations every other year since 2021, this is the straightforward creation that’s nonetheless faithful to the genre as a whole with every movement of Borracho dominating, compelling, and downright thrilling to witness. Still riding the wave of excellence that Borracho has enjoyed for years now with its potency and passion still showing no signs of slowing down even for the oncoming shore, it’s whole of “Ouroboros” that shines in a scene trying to do the very same even if this record doesn’t do anything in ways of offering anything that’s necessarily new to the sound at large. Rather, there are veterans of the craft doing what they do best and having a damn good time doing so, and, sometimes, that’s all you need.
Where potential swirls around practically every corner and offers anything the mind can imagine, it’s because of bands like Borracho that the stoner scene at a whole still has so much more to offer. For those looking for a listen where you can feel the warmth of the sun on your back and the wind in your hair as the euphoria of rock-and-roll fueled freedom flows through your veins, damn near every minute of “Ouroboros” has got what you need in spades.
