Long has there been plenty of talent that calls the reaches of atmospheric black metal home, and long has it been as well that the sound has felt oversaturated for numerous reasons. It’s a style that can easily resonate with the soul should the right moves be made, but it oftentimes feels like there are those that don’t take the time to properly construct their work to really do justice by the sound in a way that still feels fresh and interesting. Fortunately, there are always those that top our expectations and keep things incredibly interesting. With their latest offering, Skyborne Reveries offers that and far more.
Of all the things that can be lacking from this particular corner of the underground, it’s the scene of scale and scope that I feel is what many miss out on for one reason or another. There is little that can be compared to properly done atmosphere that feels organic and compelling for all that it manages across vast melodies and compelling songwriting that knows how to be dynamic from start to finish. Out of everything that Skyborne Reveries brings to the table in its eponymous album, that has to be the biggest victory out of an absolute score of wins across the entirety of these eight expansive tracks. With two distinct halves that demonstrate a somewhat folk-oriented approach and another that’s more drawn-out and oftentimes patient, Skyborne Reveries really went for it during the crafting of this effort to show the vast repertoire of talent that we’re precisely dealing with. In no small form, this is a work that fires on all cylinders and never misses an opportunity for greatness. Skyborne Reveries has been toiling away for eight years now, and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t show. Enchanting yet nonetheless intense for all that it summons from the ancient reaches of the world where incredibly few can ever hope to tread, it’s here that Skyborne Reveries delivers in a style that is always in demand for more and more talent that can satisfy, astonish, and intoxicate.
This is absolutely a piece that stands out for many different reasons, and there is little that I can do to deny the overwhelming majesty that Skyborne Reveries has wrought with mastery and finesse in damn near every moment of this creation. Vast and sprawling for all that it dares to be, there isn’t so much as an inch of this work that Skyborne Reveries should not be immensely proud of.
