Enragement – Extinguish All Existence

I have always been a firm believer in that there’s always a time and a place for all sorts of innovation and flashy techniques in a style that’s as teeming with possibility like what we see with the likes of death metal. It can absolutely make for a tremendous display of prowess that showcases how much the style can still be in the right hands with the possibilities seemingly endless, but it can oftentimes be the more grounded and directed approach that can achieve similar results without sacrificing technique nor undeniable mastery in the process. There are any number of bands that can be defined in such a manner, yet it is with their forthcoming effort that Enragement shows us how it’s really done to tremendous effect with few able to hold a candle to the overwhelming inferno that’s at play throughout this entire creation.

There has never really been anything simple about the sprawling realms of brutal death metal for all the caustic and intense scenes that are to be found throughout the sound, yet it’s not nearly often enough that we’re met with a band that can really offer some form of nuance into the madness such that the raw structure of the composition itself is something to marvel at. Pound for pound, everything that Enragement brought to the table for their fourth album, “Extinguish All Existence”, does more than enough to live up to the album’s name. An eviscerating set of ten tracks that are always seeking to pummel you into the earth until you’re naught but a fine red paste that’s little more than a stain in the dirt, this is what it means to give brutal death metal the proper treatment such that damn near everything about this record from its mixing to its riffs to the speed itself stand out in such a magnificently oppressive form that one’s knees cannot help but buckle before such awesome might. “Extinguish All Existence” makes its mission clear from the very start: no survivors. Intertwining melodies with exquisite evisceration that feels as blissful as something out of the Hellraiser franchise, this is an effort that revels in its smaller moments of sadism while always ensuring its grander vision of humanity’s extinction is met without so much as a shred of mercy for any poor soul in its path.

The planet itself heaves to the might of Enragement. Brutal death metal has not been lacking in quality representation as of late, yet there’s just something particularly fascinating about what Enragement manages to bring forward through every excruciatingly brutal moment of “Extinguish All Existence” that feels nigh on hypnotic to really set the creation apart from much of what the style has delivered. Nuanced but nonetheless carnivorous, this is a record made for those who want to be pummeled out of this existence in such a fashion that is singularly barbaric in nature but gripping in execution.
