There’s almost a perpetual darkness that genres like death metal call their own that many are content to become lost within for all that’s to be uncovered throughout the writhing darkness, yet it’s not always that we’re able to come before a band that can truly deepen that intensity without becoming overwhelmed by what magnificent void they find themselves within. It can lead to some excellence, that much is obvious, but it takes another cut of talent altogether to make for something that really scathes the spirit and burns the flesh in an instant. As time goes on, some talent only proves to become ever more proficient in carving out their own niche in that pitch blackness. With their third full-length effort, Undersave shows us how it’s done to terrifying effect.

It’s one thing to strive for something that feels fresh an unexplored in your own personal flavor as a musician, but it’s something else of a different ilk when we’re able to bear witness to a name that really defines what their particular sound can become with all the nuance, menace, and power that a sound such as death metal requires of even its most introductory of students. Undersave has been in the game for over twenty years now, and while they may not be as productive as many of their contemporaries, it’s painfully obvious that this is a band that does not remain stagnant with every record seemingly improved and more mature than the last with their latest work, “Merged in Abstract Perdition”, only continuing that foray into dark mastery. This is darkly jagged death metal with no room for error. Even the slightest glance in the wrong direction feels as though it could spell your demise. Dense yet undeniably atmospheric, what Undersave brings to the table here is labyrinthine in its haunting passages, unyielding songwriting, and unmistakable in its primal energies that permeates damn near every possible moment that “Merged in Abstract Perdition” has to offer.

A work that demands several listens in order to fully experience lest the overwhelming nature of the work fly past you, Undersave ushers in a new age of darkness that signals a new chapter for the band in a way that is nigh on captivating to watch unfold. Impenetrably vicious and the definition of caustic alongside a dissonant nature, the very whole of “Merged in Abstract Perdition” is not something for the weak of heart.
