Perpetually, we’re always on the lookout for the next big thing. Whether we want to admit it or not even if we’re already drowning in stupendous talent, the mind cannot help but wonder what will come next that could blows our minds and impress us in a way that feels earth-shattering. For some of us, such an act never comes around to fit one’s high standards. For others, though, it’s only a matter of time. To live in the shifting landscape of heavy psychedelic rock is to always be frothing at the mouth for something new to come from this evolving scene that has so much to offer even after such titanic accomplishments from the likes of King Buffalo, Rezn, Kal-El, and more as the years have piled on. Such instances require patience in light of such vigilant anticipation. Now, with electricity in the air at the arrival of Insomniac, it is here that we’re presented with what could be argued as the crowning achievement of heavy psychedelia in 2025.
Dealing with new talent is always a tricky thing. At first, the mind wants to ride the high of a fantastic new discovery and build the work up to be something far more than what it actually is – a constant pitfall that’s difficult to avoid as a lowly reviewer such as myself when we’re presented with something that scratches a specific itch in the limbic labyrinth in our skulls. You have to let it all marinate and you must explore all the flavors that you’re presented with.
You don’t just look at a corner of a painting and know it’s genius – you analyze the entire piece from the pigments to the delicate touches to its heavy-handed globs to how everything mixes together to the mood of the piece itself to the mindset of the artist at the time of the work’s creation. All that and more go into understanding a piece for all that it is. Only then, after becoming unapologetically lost within such a piece can its lasting impact finally click. At that final epitome, art takes on its final form and leaves you simply captivated to the core of your soul.
Music is the same way. To truly become one with an effort, you have to understand everything the work has to offer. Just because a new act comes out of nothingness and delivers something that tickles the senses at first, you still have to really fall into the work and explore its every aspect. That initial euphoria can be blinding and shield our eyes to a truth that challenges the sweetness that we’re at first obsessed with. It is paramount to really comb through a creation before you can use a phrase like “masterpiece” with your whole chest. You just can’t just hail every new arrival like it is the best thing since slice bread. With all that being said, what Insomniac has crafted for their debut performance is nothing short of transformative and intoxicating for all that it brings to the table.
From the very first moments of “Om Moksha Ritam”, Insomniac seeks to open your mind. The typical boundaries of our reality no longer apply in the hands of Insomniac as it’s through its psychedelic leanings delivered by deliciously heavy riffs, engrossing atmosphere, and a smooth execution that’s magnificent to become lost with as we’re taken through a singularly dramatic experience that sees the folds of our dimension crumple, furl, and twist in such a way that is almost madness-inducing for its implications. Yet, it’s through the gentle nature of transfiguration via sonic euphoria that the magic of “Om Moksha Ritam” is woven beautifully. Each minute offers something different whether it’s an enthralling riffs or an acoustic-driven passage of increasing complexity or a moment of reprieve to admire where you’ve been, where you’re at, and where you still have yet to travel. Insomniac delivers it all with such precise mastery that one’s knees cannot help but buckle and the eyes begin to flood before such overwhelming grandeur. “Om Moksha Ritam” is a great many things, but above all else it is a creation that’s from the soul of Insomniac itself with the purity, nuance, and delicate touch that we’re constantly frothing at the mouth to experience.
This is an experience that is truly mandatory for all who consider themselves even the most casual fans of heavy psych. Insomniac went all-out to ensure that their entrance is as entrancing as it is satisfying and it would be an outright insult to make the claim that they did anything less than that to bring such a gorgeous performance to life in such an exquisite and sprawling. There’s already loads of talent to be had out in the growing realm of heavy psych such that we never have to wait long for new excellence to crop up, and it’s with maximum glory and undeniable flair that Insomniac’s bold entrance on the scene is nothing less than masterful from beginning to end.
They say that the Insomniac is not so because it cannot sleep – it chooses not to. To do so is to gain the ability to walking between the waking world and the ethereal dream realms where space is just the tip of the iceberg and reality itself contorts to the whim of the beholder. Simultaneously keeping one foot in the physical while the other is planted in the nether, “Om Moksha Ritam” builds a gorgeous bridge that holds nothing back, leaves nothing to chance, and pushes the listener forward without offering a clear path forward. Insomniac is the vessel to something greater. Unknown, but greater. They take your hand to get you down that path, but it’s at some point that Insomniac releases you to allow you to take your own journey beyond what “Om Moksha Ritam” can offer. In doing so, Insomniac does so much more than just offer a euphoric aural adventure. Rather, they offer the first steps towards your very own transformation.
