The continuation of any old school sound is something that can be quite tricky to pull off for any number of reasons. It can be difficult for a band to find a balance between making their mark their beloved style while still managing to adhere to many of the core ideals that made their genre something worthy of perpetuation. Metal has long been subjected to throngs of bands caught in just such a struggle. In the world of doom, the many different styles of the sound have led to many great creations as well as false contenders that sought to bring their own flavors to the mix only to fall flat. Excellence is not easily obtained in this corner of the underground, yet that didn’t stop Warcoe from seizing their destiny with all they’ve achieved in this third album.

Some entities simply cannot be held down for long. Whether they have self-imposed goals or a ravenous creative drive that pushes them onwards to become undeniable in their craft, a driven act can be capable of so much as long as it keeps its vision clear and concise. Easily can a band lose its way, but it’s in pushing itself that such a band can achieve great things. For all that they’ve already accomplished, Warcoe demands to be hailed as one of the more interesting names when it comes to those who venerate the old school of doom metal, yet it’s with their newest opus, “Upon Tall Thrones”, that we see the act take the next step forward and offer a performance that is downright electrifying. Maintaining a calculated level of heaviness that blends perfectly with the fuzz, haze, and riffs that Warcoe commands with masterful precision. It’s not long into “Upon Tall Thrones” that you realize this is a record that knows exactly what it wants to be and knows precisely how to deliver such magnificence with pinpoint accuracy, captivating energy, and simply tremendous songwriting that immediately sets Warcoe apart from much of the competition. Ripping solos, intoxicating pacing, and an obvious reverence for all that doom has become known for over the decades – what’s not to be enamored by here?

Fueled by passionate talent and the fervor of youth, Warcoe exemplifies what it means to be an up-and-coming entity that’s not to be taken lightly with the entirety of “Upon Tall Thrones” signaling a new era for a band whose mark will surely be made upon the modern landscape of doom. Warcoe has only been around for four years, yet their presence is already something that cannot be ignored for what it delivers in massive fashion.
