“Good things come to those who wait” is an expression that can offer a lot of relief and support when we’re dealing in the unpredictable nature of something like the metal underground. It reminds us that sometimes you have to be patient and allow things to grow naturally over time in order for them to take a proper form and have the right kind of impact rather than being rushed and released in an incomplete form. It can be all too easy for fans of all sorts to want every interesting act to release material sooner rather than later to scratch a specific itch, yet, obviously that’s not always something we can have. Every now and then, though, that rule is subverted. Daytripper did great things with their first album last year, and it’s already with a brand new EP they show us what else they’re made of.

Already, Daytripper has made its presence known. “Book I: The Trip” is a tremendous first step into the greater underground and Daytripper should still be immensely proud of what they accomplished there. It wasn’t even a year and a half between the arrival of their debut and the announcement of this new arrival, “The Alchemist”, and I have to admit that I found myself with some slight doubts. Not regarding the passion or talent of Daytripper, but, rather, whether or not Daytripper allowed this new material enough time to bake and take on its proper final form. Barely a minute into “The Alchemist” and it’s made thankfully obvious that my worries were unfounded. Four tracks are all that adorn this effort, yet never once does Daytripper squander its time nor miss an opportunity do demonstrate how far they’ve already come in hardly no time whatsoever. Heavy yet undeniably ethereal to make for a spectacular contrast that’s as captivating as it is well thought out, “The Alchemist” quickly takes on a life of its own to really enrapture your soul through its psychedelic tendencies while always making room for the more sludge-centric aspects of Daytripper’s sound to make it damn near overwhelming at times.

We’ve seen plenty of acts come around to try and show us what they’re made of, yet few have come even close to what Daytripper has accomplished in less than two years with the sky seemingly the limit for this unquestionably titanic quintet. “The Alchemist” lures you into its swirling depths with the promise of color and adventure but it’s through uncompromising intensity and a real knack for heaviness that Daytripper exceeds expectations, leaving us utterly flattened thanks to their awesome might.
