The expansion of black and death metal over the decades is no surprise. As one of the epitomes of what it means to take metal to some of its most extreme reaches, there are always bands trying their hand at bringing their own brands of intensity to the mix to deliver us experience that are as captivating as they are eviscerating. Naturally, of course, not everyone can measure up and deliver. Every now and then, though, there comes a name out of the nothingness to give us something that we can really sink our teeth into. With its debut EP, the mysterious entity of Acephalic Void already poises itself to do big things in this corner of the underground.

Given the amorphous nature of the genre as a whole, anything is possible as different approaches change greatly from one set of hands to the next with it often the case that many try different things with few able to manage all of those flavors to make for a cohesive and interesting performance. It’s something that black-death metal has been suffering from for some time now, yet it’s in the face of perseverance that we oftentimes receive a vision that we could not have anticipated. Acephalic Void’s debut is only four tracks in composition, but it’s across the nineteen-minute runtime that “We Chose Death” strikes true and accomplishes more than what much of the competition is able to manage. What we’re given in this effort is naught but evocative chaos. Constantly writhing in its own painful fury, Acephalic Void thrusts the listener into a horrific vision that moves beyond the flesh and devours the very light of existence in retaliation to reality itself. Outright in its murderous intent and always making damn sure to go for the throat in every instance, it’s through intense devilry and seductive rhythms amidst the undeniable madness that twists under the weight of its own existence that Acephalic Void allows for a singularly intense listen that asks much of its listener.

Voraciously aggressive and simply haunting in its mysterious exterior, “We Chose Death” is but the beginning of a terrifying run in the underground that this particular side of metal is always in need of. From the very beginning, Acephalic Void proves itself to be unapologetic in its visionary breed of violence that permeates the soil and the soul to a horrific degree, ensuring that by the time the EP comes to a close you’re left tainted and fundamentally affected by the madness therein.
