Some terrors take aural form. Throughout a vast swathe of what metal music can be, there are always those that are looking to twist the sound to become something that leaves an undeniable mark upon the psyche, the likes of which will leave you crawling back for more. As you might expect, such performances are few and far between. Given that, it’s important to hail a successive excursion into twisting madness when we come before an example of such terror and hail it for what it is. Hot off the heels of their hellish debut album, Dwelling Below returns to offer us just such intensity while further honing their already-deadly craft.
A two-year gap is on the low end of what many would consider to be enough time to put together a full-length record, polish it, and get it ready in such a form that feels fully realized for all that it brings to the table. Sure, we’ve seen plenty of exceptions to that, yet a band that manages to offer an experience that delivers on all fronts and feels like a step forward from its predecessor and doing so under two years is a hell of a feat. Dwelling Below doing so in a little less than two years was quite a welcome surprise. However, it’s with the sheer magnitude of everything that’s been brought to the table throughout the six tracks of “Wearisome Guardians” that the boundaries of reality become optional and the overwhelming madness of Dwelling Below washes over you like a cataclysmic tsunami. Ominous but nonetheless murderous in its sinister intent, it’s through the unyielding nastiness of their particular breed of death-doom that Dwelling Below makes its presence known in every form. Contorting reality into something abominable yet undeniably seductive in its nature, “Wearisome Guardians” has much to offer in its grimy riffs, murky atmospheres, and sprawling intensity that continues to stand out amongst stiff competition. This is death-doom that never sits in one place for long. Rather, Dwelling Below accomplishes much across a wide spectrum with the results matching their diabolic ambition.
What we’re given here is a truly insidious vision that takes the style to such extents that’s bewildering to bear witness to. Dwelling Below already proved itself a menacing monolith that’s not to be underestimated in the slightest. Instead of doing the deed and leaving you to deal with the aftermath, it’s throughout “Wearisome Guardians” that Dwelling Below plunges the knife deep into your chest, twisting as the terror of this record does its work one horrific minute at a time.

I cannot wait for this one to land. When I listened to initial track I went back and purchased their previous album. Such a good one.
