The vast breadth of what metal is capable of is something that will likely never cease to amaze me. From inventing all new levels of heaviness to traversing extraordinary dimensions through the use of psychedelia, there seems to be no end to the different avenues one can travel down. Despite that, the more gothic reaches of the genre aren’t tapped into often enough. I’m not entirely sure why that’s the case, but it is an unfortunate trend that I personally wish would come to an end as there are bands that are showcasing just how spectacular the sound can be in the right hands. As one of the foremost acts of the style, it’s with their second album that Remina offers us a visage of what it means to embody this sound for what it can be.

On its own, a gothic sense can really add some personality and flavor to a mix that can otherwise be quite bland for any number of reasons, which can be said about virtually every sound but I feel it’s particularly true here. That being said, there are extremely few bands out there that can really bring something fresh and invigorating to the table that we can really sink our teeth into and watch such majesty unfold. Remina was absolutely stunning with their debut just a few years ago, and given the talent behind the name, it was no surprise. Yet, even in the face of such excellence, it’s with the arrival of “The Silver Sea” that I cannot help but feel as though Remina has more than earned the status of being arguably the most interesting act in the whole of gothic doom metal. Smooth and glistening in its dark form, Remina is downright seductive and intoxicating throughout the absolute entirety of their sophomore effort. As capable of weaving thick atmospheres as they are of fascinating riffage, “The Silver Sea” is hypnotic to the highest degree as we’re given a tremendously dynamic performance that is satisfying to fall into and magnificently addictive. The record takes its time. It paces itself such that the journey unfolds gorgeously before your very eyes such that by the end, the visage is damn near tear-inducing for its overwhelming majesty and soul-touching euphoria that is constantly washing over you. Whether it’s the utterly stunning vocals or the intelligent songwriting that takes ahold of your hand into a glossy dimension that has so much depth to call its own, Remina’s return is something to be admired with practically every minute of “The Silver Sea” defining what it means to bring glory to the world of gothic doom metal.

This is a band that demanded our respect out of the gate, but it is now here that they have fully earned our unquestioning devotion as their excellence continues to expand. “The Silver Sea” has all the hallmarks of genius, the likes of which this style of metal is not given nearly often enough, and the sheer magic of Remina is something to be admired. For all that was brought to the table in the entirety of this gorgeous creation, it’s obvious that Remina knew what they were doing along every step of the way.
