There are many different bands out there that have helped shaped death metal into the magnificent beast that it is today, and there’s just no shortage of names coming out of the woodwork to perpetuate the genre in whatever form they can. We live in a time where there’s all sorts of grandeur to be had with it being downright effortless to become lost within it all. Some manage to consistently stand out, however, and Revocation is easily one of them. Reigning over their own corner of death metal with a thrashy and technical offensive that has yet to miss, this is a name that has demanded respect and commanded our attention for several years now. Now, with the arrival of their ninth album, that trend is only furthered.
It’s ever so tempting to consider a new creation from a well-respected act as a slam-dunk creation that is just a given when it comes to high quality and magnificence from top to bottom, but it’s important to remain as objective and critical as you can when you’re a pitiful reviewer such as myself. Even the greats slip up from time to time. Revocation has been undeniably consistent throughout its discography with their technical prowess and brutality rarely waning lest it’s to add tremendous contrast to further the band’s understanding of their sound in a way that is beyond impactful. With all that being said, it’s damn near every given inch of “New Gods, New Masters” that showcases yet another magnificent step forward for Revocation’s dominance over the sound. Nine tracks of undeniable evisceration and overloaded with social commentary that is beyond fitting for the current climate that we find ourselves in all over the world, Revocation held nothing back to not just offer a worthy follow-up to 2022’s “Netherheaven” but offer listeners a singularly intense vision that achieves dark glory in damn near every form. From its captivating riffage to the masterful guest appearances to the sheer structure of the record itself, it’s in virtually every minute of “New Gods, New Masters” that Revocation sought to somehow raise an already extremely high bar with the results of this album absolutely bombastic.
Revocation has always been seeking a path forward. With everything they brought to the table throughout the entirety of this creation, they manage to do that and ensure that their legacy is kept in tremendous shape without so much as a moment of compromise. “New Gods, New Masters” is a sublime performance that engrosses the listener wholly and leaves no moment for hope, salvation, nor mercy as we traverse this unforgivingly dark world.
