In the space between raw heaviness and calculated psychedelic bliss, there are some bands out there changing the scene and integrating new flavors into an already bombastic scene that has never once been lacking in potential. We’re fortunate enough to live in a time where there are tons and tons of bands out and about that demonstrate a viciously deep understanding of the craft to such a degree that one’s knees cannot help but buckle before the magnificent sights that such talent is able to uncover seemingly without breaking a sweat. There are plenty of names out there that are carving out tremendous reputations for themselves, but, for me, it’s Birds of Nazca that deserve to be hailed as one of the most exciting and engaging names with their newest effort cementing their rise to excellence.

When dealing with any sort of instrumental material, it is paramount that you are able to transport your listener into your realm seamlessly and then be able to keep them rooted in place such that the concept of a guiding voice never even crosses their minds as the instrumental do all the heavy lifting. That’s something which is critical to any instrumental creation, but not every act in that enters that world is able to measure up for one reason or another. Since day one, Birds of Nazca has demonstrated an intimate awareness of such a pitfall with time only further increasing their magnificence to propel them to the forefront of instrumental heaviness where the line between metal and rock is blurred by delectable psychedelic dust, and it’s with their third album, “Pangaea”, that this French duo takes the next step in their glorious evolution. Filled with awe-inspiring visages that take you on a journey that’s downright transformative with Birds of Nazca’s impeccable sense of heaviness and multi-dimensional songwriting, this record is so expansive and epic in scope that its name is more than fitting. Where raw energy meets psychedelic euphoria and compelling themes riddled with meaning and symbolism, Birds of Nazca offers us an experience that demands to become lost within, time and time again, as the world itself is shaken by the might that this duo commands with ease. “Pangaea” sees a return to something primal while ensuring that Birds of Nazca is able to move forward in great strides without struggling for so much as a moment.

Where many would take some time before coming into their own in this voiceless realm, Birds of Nazca required virtually no time at all with this third effort of theirs catapulting them far above the vast majority of the competition to fly high amongst the cosmos where anything seems possible. “Pangaea” has so much offer you in its expanse, you need only to take that first step under its blazing sun whilst the earth itself cracks open before such might. Once inside, you’ll wonder how you’ve gone your entire life without the splendor that Birds of Nazca holds complete dominion over.
