It should not come as a surprise anymore to see the combination of stoner and doom metal tendencies for a combined performance wreathed in smoke and dripping in fuzz. Such a concoction has been a natural combo for quite some time now as the many different forms of heaviness in psychedelia have reached a sort of golden age for all the right reasons, and there are always bands looking to make their claim in amongst stiff competition. You need to really stand out in order to make your sound clear amongst the vast number of other contenders. As one, it’s with their third album that Bogwife once again puts its best foot forward to make their presence known far and wide in exquisite form.

Despite how widespread intensity and psychedelia has become in recent years, it is still an undoubtedly difficult combination to pull off as there are so many different contrasting factors working against each other as bands are left wondering whether they dive into the psychedelia reaches or offer a good heavy crunch. Both are great options in the right circumstances, but to see each tackled simultaneously and in a way that feels organic and compelling, it doesn’t take a genius to see the work is something special. Bogwife has done that twice before, yet it is now here with the eight tracks of “From Ashes” that they’ve almost certainly achieved a new peak with all the fascination and splendor that comes with such heights. Hypnotic and downright thunderous when the time is right, Bogwife’s mystical nature is given the center stage yet again to offer us twisting visions of ethereal wonder that never once holds back nor misses an opportunity to open the mind’s eye and allow the listener to perceive the dim light in thickening darkness that can all too easily feel suffocating. “From Ashes” revels in its smallest moments while always making time to shine brightly when it unfurls its wings and takes glorious flight, taking its time to soak in the sights, feel the warmth of the sun, and dance with the wind itself. Bogwife flourishes in its blues-riddled freedom to the point that it’s downright infectious to become lost within.

Securing their place in the growing pantheon of expansive wonder that modern stoner metal has made for itself, it’s practically every minute of “From Ashes” that only adds fuel to the flames of immensity that propels Bogwife to another level. Dynamic and simply engrossing, this is a record that dares you to take the plunge. To do so is to become lost in a kaleidoscopic realm with so much to discover within, every little morsel offering something new and grandiose of us to sink our teeth into.
