Evolution has long been a consistent theme for many bands across the entire underground for any act in any genre. It’s what keeps things moving forward and preventing us from the terrible fate of stagnation. The underground is a revolving door of bands seeking to climb the ladder and emerge from obscurity victorious and proud of what they’ve accomplished, and at any given time there’s a litany of names worthy of mention. Having made their impact known for years as they’ve only progressed to greater heights with each subsequent offering, Howling Giant stands as one of modern rock’s most engaging new names. If it wasn’t their second album from two years ago that caught your attention, then it’s the entirety of their brand-new third offering that should be simply gripping from beginning to end.

Over the years, it’s only natural to assume that any given band would seek to improve their craft through one means or another. However, progress is rarely linear. With the stipulations and difficulty of life that come outside the intense creative process that rarely offers reprieve, anything can send a band down a less than savory path for any possible reason. Yet, that has never stopped Howling Giant, whose ascension has remained steadily skyward as they continue to hone their sound in such a way that has rightfully earned them many accolades, and it’s with every bit of their new effort, “Crucible & Ruin”, that we see that trend furthered magnificently. Doubling down on the heavy aspect of their style, it’s in the ten tracks of “Crucible & Ruin” that Howling Giant once again aims for the cosmos and achieves glory in that is simply intoxicating to witness as the stars themselves brighten in response to this album’s entrancing might. Armed with incredibly smooth songwriting that gives way to tremendous themes and high levels of captivation, it’s the very essence of this record that is more than worthy of talking about for all that it dares to accomplish in its scope. The overarching realm of heavy psychedelia has long been a place to watch for all of its many moving parts and big names making great albums, and it’s here that Howling Giant has cemented their place at the very forefront of greatness for what that style is capable of.

Howling Giant requires no introduction upon the release of this album. This is a name that has constantly sought to raise the bar in some form or another, and it demands to be made clear that they did so in exemplary fashion throughout the entirety of “Crucible & Ruin”. A magnificent step forward on virutally every front, Howling Giant’s radiance can only be compared to that of the most brilliant sun.
