They say that it is best to strike while the iron is hot, but what’s to be said for those that never let the iron become cold in the first place? The underground is absolutely littered with tons of names that are constantly pumping out new material at a rate that can be considered quite troubling, for at some point the argument of quantity over quality is more than likely to come into play. For most, that’s a conversation that seriously needs to be had. In rare cases, however, we’re given bands that are able to just remain consistent in their high quality and manage to impress us year after year. Not even a year after their last effort, Veilburner already returns to us with their glorious eighth album, their fourth in five years.

When dealing with a band like this, it can be almost natural to see such output and feel as though a decline has occurred when it comes to the overall integrity of the band’s efforts, yet, like many other aspects, that doesn’t seem to apply to Veilburner. At least, not yet. Every work from this visionary act has been distinct, offering us a new visage of Veilburner and its vast capabilities virtually without compromise. Last year’s effort arguably one of the band’s most intense to date. With their eighth offering, “Longing for Triumph, Reeking of Tragedy”, Veilburner offers us a sight that is still deeply entrenched in the band’s black-death metal lore of otherworldly madness, but there’s a kaleidoscopic nature to the record that infuses color, wonder, and majesty into a mix that maintains an aura of menace, terror, and overwhelming dread. Across a sprawling 51-minute runtime, Veilburner constantly shows us terrifying visions of cyclical madness beyond infinity, writhing in its torment but still somehow managing to find splendor amongst it all in such a form that’s compelling, engrossing, and dazzling to practically every one of the senses. Each track has its own bold personality that constantly fold into each other stylistically, thematically, and musically one such a level that one cannot help but become sucked into the overwhelming tide that Veilburner commands throughout the entirety of the harrowing intensity of “Longing for Triumph, Reeking of Tragedy”.

Dense but intensely frenetic, Veilburner’s dark magic still has yet to wane in its ever-shifting menace! We’ve seen plenty of acts come across over the years to alter the worlds of black-death metal in a way that’s nigh on encapsulating for every single aspect of all that’s brought to the table. Where many might scratch the surface and allow the visions of madness to leak through, there’s nothing about “Longing for Triumph, Reeking of Tragedy” that isn’t pulled off with terrifying proficiency. Veilburner needed no introduction before this record, and it’s with everything about this record that Veilburner cements itself as one of the premier acts of the mirky underworld that demands to be experienced.
