Vomitile – Faces of Terror

For all that is required to survive in the rabid depths of the underground, patience is something that can oftentimes be mandatory. Lest you want to be halted by the frustrations of not getting your way almost immediately, it is imperative that you go one step at a time and take heed with every stride. You may find yourself before a great act which puts on a magnificent performance one day only to find yourself several years down the line waiting for a follow-up. Many such acts throughout the deep layers of obscurity require such patience, and, for me, Vomitile is one of them. Seven years since their fantastic last album, the return of Vomitile is an exceedingly welcome turn of events.

While there’s always plenty of time to be had for bands going all in and ensuring their craft is exceedingly brutal right from the beginning, all too often do many forget that a little bit of melody in the mix can really open up possibilities. You don’t need a lot of it as all things in moderation can do wonders for those who know how to execute such a thing properly. Vomitile has been no stranger whatsoever to melody (see damn near every other minute of 2018’s “Pure Eternal Hate”), but they’ve always managed to straddle the line of raw ferocity and calculated bounce in a way that really grabs the listener by the throat and gaslights the poor soul into believing that exquisite suffering is what they’ve been missing in their life. Their brand new EP, “Faces of Terror”, has but five tracks to call its own, but it continues the trends that the preceding creations laid forth. Captivating in its rhythms and undeniable in its brute force that never once backs down in its pursuit of hyper-violence as the listener is put through the most magnificent torture, Vomitile’s return picks up right where the Greek act left off in earnest. Simple in its crafting yet viciously effective in its delivery, “Faces of Terror” knew precisely what it wanted to be from its very inception. Melodic yet nonetheless unapologetically brutal, it is here that Vomitile shows us how its done in fantastic order.

I never would have guessed that it would have taken Vomitile seven long years to finally come back to us, and while I will not pontificate right now on whether such a long wait was worth it, I simply cannot deny that it’s a magnificent sight for some truly sore eyes to see the name return. Anything could have happened in that time, yet the end-result of “Faces of Terror” is something that I cannot help but revel in for everything that it dares to be and knows how to deliver in exemplary fashion.
