Depravity – Bestial Possession

To rise through the dense thicket of the underground is to achieve greatness again and again. There is nothing but stiff competition at any given time, making anyone’s rise difficult to ascertain given the high bar that is needed to not just stand out amongst the crowd but to remain consistent simultaneously. When such a name does happen to come around, it demands to be hailed and, fortunately, that has been the case for many names over the years. Offering us just one of many reasons as to why the Australian scene has not been anything to deny for a long time now, Depravity has been a titanically rising force in the world of death metal. Now, five years after their last outing, they’ve returned to remind us precisely why they are still at the top of the food chain.

With all that’s able to be thrown down across the vast spectrum of death metal, it’s always an impressive feat of strength and uncompromising mastery to see a band come around, offer the promise of future onslaughts, and deliver on that very promise in such a way that’s beyond rewarding to witness. It’s not terribly often we see a band like that come around, and Depravity is anything but common. Their brand of death metal is the definition of carnivorous. It’s with the arrival of their third album, “Bestial Possession”, that this diabolical unit of overwhelming madness shows us how far it has come in its five-year silence with the results no less than captivating from top to bottom. A horrific creation that holds nothing back and makes damn sure the listener is throttled within an inch of their life over and over again, this is a record that makes damn sure you are left a pathetic mass of viscera, bone, and anguish upon the floor, somehow begging for more. It’s right from the beginning that “Bestial Possession” makes its uncompromising brand of oppression something that’s not to be underestimated in the slightest lest the unmerciful nature of Depravity steamroll you into an exquisitely excruciating demise the likes of which many in death metal promise yet few are able to achieve in such rich magnificence. Depravity taps into the old school consistently but never allows that to hold them back for so much as a moment. The result is a dynamic and imposing brand of terror the likes of which Depravity has practically trademarked, enabling them to not just remind us why they’re not to be underestimated even after five years of silence but showcasing why there just isn’t much that can stand before their awesome and terrific displays of power.

Depravity could have disappeared for ten years, and I don’t think they would have lost so much as an iota of their bloodthirst nor their intensity. Death metal is blessed with being inundated with loads of different bands striving for excellence, yet it takes something else entirely to come before an entity that showcases otherworldly mastery of a sort that is nigh on compelling from start to finish without so much as a blemish to be find throughout their many testaments of torturous woe. “Bestial Possession” practically has it all to bring death to this realm and darkness to the skies!

“Bestial Possession” releases on November 21st via Transcending Obscurity Records!
