For all that folk metal has brought to the table throughout this year, I think it’s safe to say that we’ve seen a fair number of surprises as well as expected creations that still somehow manage to become far more than what we could have possibly hoped for. Whether it was long-established names or the new blood seeking to invoke the old world, it’s clear that all things related to folk metal still have so much to be said with a voice that’s powerful and resounding. Even as we find ourselves coming upon the last days of the year, the genre still has great strength and mysticism to offer us! After only two years since their last full-length, Olde Throne’s third opus could be the last great stop for folk metal in 2025, and what a stop it is!
When we’re dealing with such established talent like Olde Throne, there is only one questions that’s to be asked: what comes next? After making itself known as an undeniable force in the modern landscape of atmospheric black metal, Olde Throne drew great inspiration from its surroundings of the highlands of Scotland to great effect with its second album, 2023’s “In the Land of Ghosts”, but it would be indignant to suggest that the land had nothing but a vicious lasting impact on the name. Even after joining forces with Paisaunt for a split last year, I think it’s safe to say that Olde Throne knew precisely the next logical steps to take in its evolution. Anything could have been possible with this third opus. In turning even deeper into the pagan realms to thrust the listener into a Neolithic soundscape of gorgeous instrumentation, impeccable songwriting, and undeniable mastery that we see “Megalith” take form. Along with the arrival of a second songwriter, the mastermind behind Marrasmieli, Sammale, and the aforementioned Paisaunt, this sprawling creation offers us a unique vision that’s as grand in scope as it is overwhelming in its captivating flavors.
From start to finish, it’s made clear that Olde Throne is doing far more than dabbling in the old magic; this act is fully submersed in its grandeur! Composed as a single, cohesive experience that hurls the listener into a mist-laden weald where the very spirits come out to dance before the performance of Olde Throne with the trees themselves heaving before such compelling might. The black metal throughout “Megalith” is simply exquisite with its ferocity, all-powerful melodies, and unmistakable understanding of the sound that comes to you with such force that your knees buckle before such excellence, the vast capacity of the ancient realms laying bare its secrets for those that become enchanted by these rituals. Even then, the scathing nature of the black metal is blended perfectly with the folk aspect that’s absolutely integral to the very DNA of “Megalith”. The soul is called to a primordial time where our modern woes were never once fathomed in a place where the skies danced, the woods whispered, and the flames flickered in reverence to all living things. Olde Throne has greatly expanded its expertise to include flutes, enchanting singing, and tribalistic drums to make “Megalith” as immersive as it is deeply impactful! There isn’t so much as a minute of this creation that was delicately crafted for a premier experience of a sort that we’re lucky to get even once or twice in a year. Even so, in a year overflowing with outstanding quality, Olde Throne stands out in exemplary fashion!
Even with it being released so late in the year, the power of “Megalith” is nothing to be denied for it does far more than go toe-to-toe with damn near all of the competition that this genre has boasted lately. Injected with the very sort of old magic that many are striving to achieve yet rarely can, it’s in practically every form that Olde Throne excels, surpasses, and dominates with all that is summoned to bring this album to life. Fare not into the circles of “Megalith” lest you’re ready to witness rituals thought long-forgotten, for their sway and magnitude are nothing to be denied even by the staunchest bulwark of supposed modernity; Olde Throne’s magic is beyond all-compelling.
