While it’s always tempting to go above and beyond to craft a piece of music that is undeniably complex and winding in its nature, it can be ever more effective to keep things simple and know how to capitalize on what such an opportunity brings. That being said, sometimes it can be quite difficult to make things simple but still undeniably satisfying without recycling old notions or making your material feel uninspired or outright lazy. It’s something that plagues many throughout the metal underground, yet there are always plenty of acts coming together to try and show us how it’s done with few able to deliver. Throughout the entirety of their first full-length album, Scorching Tomb stands tall as one of the very few that actually can.
There’s no shame whatsoever in trying to craft a body of work that defies expectations and really pushes the envelope for the given sound in such a way that catches people off-guard and leaves you wondering where such talent has been all your life, but there just isn’t much out there that can compare to something relatively simple in nature and straight to the point. It still takes a respectable amount of ingeniuty and craftsmanship to deliver such an effort that can stand on its own feet and dominate in its own way. Scorching Tomb has been throwing down death metal for six years now with only a demo, split, and an EP to call their own, but it’s every given shred of domination throughout the eight tracks of “Ossuary” that this Canadian quartet puts their power on full display without a shred of compromise. A no-frills approach to death metal but nonetheless ball-crushingly intoxicating in its heaviness, Scorching Tomb weaves a dark magic that worms its way into your skull, ensuring this death metal is something you cannot go long without needing another hit. Riffs abound and irrefutably unyielding in its oppressive heaviness that’s thick and ferocious in every given moment, “Ossuary” knows not the definition of mercy. From beginning to end, Scorching Tomb lumbers forth as an ungodly force with otherworldly rage and madness channeled magnificently into a vessel of death metal that’s fully realized and mature to such a degree that one’s knees cannot help but buckle before such tremendous might.
It’s not uncommon whatsoever to see death metal go down this route, but it still requires quite a bit from the musicians in question to bring forth an experience that delivers on much of what this genre can still become in the best of circumstances. An effective instrument in its simplicity but diabolical in its versatility, Scorching Tomb can be likened to a well-honed razor’s edge with everything that’s deliver throughout “Ossuary”.
