Not often enough are we given performances that truly embody what it means to be psychedelic. Sure, we’ve seen plenty of examples come forth out of the smoke-wreathed realms of rock and doom, but it’s not commonplace to see psychedelia outside of those styles. It can exceedingly hard thing to pull off even for seasoned musicians, but that doesn’t stop the daring and the bold from trying every now and then, and sometimes we’re given an act that’s able to defy expectations time after time. As one of the strangest yet most fascinating entities that this corner of metal has to offer, it’s with their fourth album in ten years that Wolvennest delivers yet another truly stunning performance.
For the longest time, psychedelia has been one of the most fascinating aspects in the modern landscape of musical heaviness. We’ve seen throngs of bands come around and try their own spin on the idea whether it’s a sprawling hellscape of incorporeal madness and confusion like what we see from Neptunian Maximalism or something far more straightforward from the likes of bands such as The Re-Stoned. There’s tons of be enjoyed from those bands, but it’s over the years that Wolvennest has offered multiple tremendous displays of precisely what it means to be psychedelia to metal in a way that feels organic, free, and simply intoxicating to become lost within. That rings true still throughout the whole of “Procession”. A transcendent experience that traverses over an hour of interdimensional and abstract space that knows no true boundaries, there doesn’t seem to be anything that Wolvennest isn’t immensely capable of. Across eleven tracks that defy conventional notion and seek to blur the line between much of what magic metal can still posses in the right hands, words fail to accurately describe all that Wolvennest has accomplished here. Not merely a work of mild trippiness nor something that bites off more than it can chew. Rather, it’s at every turn “Procession” proves itself over and over again as a tour de force of creativity, splendor, and intensity of a sort that we very rarely get to witness.
Wolvennest has been making quite a name for itself over the last ten years, yet it’s everything that’s been brought to the table throughout “Procession” that it’s tempting to say that we see things taken to a new level.
