While there’s always something to be said about quality over quantity, there are times where you simply wish there was more to go around. When it comes to niche genres, it can oftentimes be the case that we’re given tremendous talent, yet it only ever comes around in rare conditions with patience outright necessary for any fans of the sound lest the waiting for the next work drive them mad. That being said, it’s every now and then that we’re granted another offering far sooner than we could have expected. It was just two years ago that Oromet came around with its sensational debut that showcased what funeral doom could still offer, and now it’s with their sophomore effort that the unit has already grown immensely in its power.
The sheer magnitude of funeral doom is something to be respected. Even if the band in question isn’t fully equipped to measure up to much of the competition, the dominating presence that the genre commands in virtually every moment is nigh on inescapable with the finest acts of the sound allowing the craft to be taken to extreme heights in all directions. Oromet utilized that concept to great effect before, but it’s with the three tracks of “The Sinking Isle” that the act takes an evocative turn that’s as captivating as it is intense and undeniable in its rich flavors. A cyclical effort that utilizes melody through tremendously drawn out riffs that bring everything together alongside intoxicating atmosphere that never abates even if the moments of ultimate darkness and despair, Oromet’s aural tapestry is as gorgeous as it is heavy in every aspect. Despite such oppressive darkness and related themes, there’s undeniable light woven into the very genetics of “The Sinking Isle”. It’s warm and fleeting, but its mere presence is something that we rarely get to see in the normally cold and harsh realms of funeral doom, quickly enabling Oromet to stand out even more while the whole of the creation is something that demands to be absorbed and experience wholly lest some morsel of true genius pass you by.
Already, it was clear to us that Oromet was something special given the majesty of its debut album, but it’s now that I believe their destiny for greatness is all but inevitable given everything that’s to be found throughout every given moment of “The Sinking Isle”. A singularly gorgeous effort that stands toe-to-toe with much of the competition be it the new Bell Witch effort or any other name in the whole of funeral doom, Oromet is a presence whose dominating aura is not something to be denied nor ignored. This is regality and majesty made manifest in a supremely heavy form.
