As well and good as it is to witness a band put together a performance loaded with gripping melody and tons of fascinating rhythms that we can latch onto, there are just few things that can compare to an effort that’s jagged and quite rough around the edges. A creation that’s slightly distorted and almost purposefully disjointed as to really get underneath the skin of its listeners is something that we’ve seen plenty attempt as the underground has continued to expand and deepen as the years have gone on. However, very few are able to accomplish such a demented feat. It takes real vision and persistence alongside malice and power to bring about such a piece, and we’re always on the lookout for the next act that can deliver. With their debut album, Death Obvious are certainly on the right track.
Creations such as this are almost impenetrable by design. Something that you really have to work for should you ever hope to properly get a real taste for what the album has to offer, and that’s an understandable turn-off for many. At times, it feels like only the critics and ultra-jaded metal listeners are those that are drawn to pieces like this as it’s anything but an easy or casual listen. That being said, I cannot help but get the feeling as though Death Obvious is on the path for great success should they simply continue with the momentum they’ve attained in the making of their self-titled debut. There isn’t so much as a minute of this track that’s meant to be a walk in the park or even something that makes you feel good in general. Rather, it’s throughout the whole of this piece that Death Obvious went for a sound that goes for the throat, torments the psyche, and taints the spirit in such diabolical fashion that a second listen is almost mandatory for you surely did not experience it all one the first run throughout given how dense and frenetic this album is.
There’s still loads of improvement to be had before Death Obvious can be considered a certifiable force to be reckoned with, but if this is what these guys can already deliver on what’s only their first album, then I cannot help but feel as though it won’t be too long before Death Obvious is moving at such uncompromising pace that their might is undeniable. The underground has yet to uncover all of its surprises, but it’s here that are get a little peek behind the veil to see what the writhing darkness can still throw our way.
