Even as we find ourselves in a grandiose age for all things related to extreme metal, there are few things that can ever hope to live up to death metal that goes above and beyond this mortal coil, ascending to such heights that are simply awe-inspiring to gaze upon. It’s only a matter of time before we’re offered some new creation that challenges listeners and demands our attention. At that point, it’s only a matter of who. The underground is vast and it is bountiful to those who wait and look in the right places. VoidCeremony made one hell of a splash with their latest album, and a brief investigation is all it takes to see why.

As a rising name in the underground for all the right reasons, it only feels like destiny when a creation like VoidCeremony comes around and doesn’t just do a damn good job, but blow expectations out of the water altogether. VoidCeremony has already been a name to respect as it’s over the course of over ten years that this act has made quite a reputation for itself as one of the forerunners for all things in progressive death metal, yet it is with practically every given facet of their latest creation, “Abditum”, that we see the Californian act come to an undeniable peak. Across all nine of these tracks, we’re given a vast breadth scope of magnificence and understanding of the craft in such a way that makes one fall to their knees in reverence. “Abditum” is nothing if not gloriously versatile with everything that’s brought to the table no less than deadly in its effectiveness and brilliant in its execution. Without a shred of compromise nor missing a single beat in ferocity nor atmosphere, this is what peak progressive death metal looks like in the hands of certifiable masters.

VoidCeremony has been on the rise, and it’s here that they’ve reached their most evolved and mature form to date with all the bells and whistles that comes with such a spectacle. It’s no surprise why “Abditum” has already been hailed as one of 2025’s very best for everything that it dares to be and accomplishes in superb fashion.
