At some point, the most jaded artists become something of an unholy force. It’s one thing to deliver greatness in a single band, but to explore different realms and show us how multi-faceted you are by showing up in multiple bands and killing it in every single one is something that we’re slowly seeing more of in the vastness of the underground. Such masterminds aren’t oftentimes in the same unit together as we’re lucky to get one per band, but it’s every so often that we’re given a collective vision from multiple such masters under a single banner. It’s been six years since they last brought us material before dispersing to pull off other accomplishments in different acts, yet it’s here that the members of Ectovoid put forth death metal undeniable.

When we’re dealing with artists that are well and truly steeped in much of what the genre can become, it only makes sense that they refuse to take the easy way out. There’s more than enough of a challenge to be had in crafting a relatively simplistic creation that scratches a particular itch in the back of the skull, but it can be far more rewarding for the artist in question to create something that is genuinely uncomfortable to listen to in plenty of aspects with the aural experience itself feeling downright carnivorous in essence. For everything summoned from the darkest abyssal realms, it’s every given moment of “In Unreality’s Coffin” that showcases precisely what kind of deadly talent we’re dealing with here. A ferociously focused assault upon all that the light touches without so much as a shred of mercy to be had in all of its nine eviscerating tracks, the collective past experience of Ectovoid’s members do them great justice throughout this performance. Interwoven with dastardly hooks that draw you ever deeper into this writhing performance, it’s the very soul of “In Unreality’s Coffin” that’s carefully designed to get under your skin with naught but terror and menace to be had for those who are not prepared for this oppressive creation.

Anything but a record that offers reprieve of any sort, it’s here that Ectovoid likely reach new heights for their journey through the genre. These guys have accomplished much in plenty of others acts, and it’s here that they yet again deserve to be lauded for everything brought together to bring “In Unreality’s Coffin” to life in excruciating detail. Not so much as a ray of light is left unscarred before the terrific unholy power that this creation possesses, and Ectovoid makes it look downright effortless.
