Unchurch – s/t

There are many things that are possible throughout the different realms of death metal, yet it can sometimes be the case that in keeping things simple that you can find yourself in the most successful of circumstances. We have seen many times over plenty of bands seeking to bring such an approach forward only to squander the opportunity to craft something that feels dreadfully boring and uninspired, but it is every now and then that we get something that absolutely capitalizes on such possibilities. Despite this being the band’s first full-length album, Unchurch draws upon loads of past experience in other bands to make for a massive step forward.

A clear path forward can be all the difference one needs in order to deliver a performance that actually manages to follow through on potential and allow the band to seize their destiny in a way that is more than satisfying enough to become lost within. I find it fascinating that we can have all these different realms of extremity coexisting with all their different aspects and flavors coming together to offer us loads of different interpretations with bombastic performances, and it’s their first album that Unchurch shows us how you can straddle the schism’s line to offer us a vicious effort that’s quite complex and delicately layered while never once becoming too lofty in its intense magnificence. Out of the gate, Unchurch makes itself known as a truly diabolical entity that’s not going to be held back by the meager confines of man. This is a self-titled work that is an absolute statement. Death metal that holds nothing back, offers no reprieve, and ensures that light itself has no place in this creation as the riffs and barrages of unholy madness are constantly claw at the walls of reality, it ought to go without saying the fourth of these nine tracks that Unchurch knew precisely what they were going for, how to bring it about, and executed it all in such vicious fashion that the results are simply undeniable. There’s more than enough sinister intent throughout the whole of the eponymous record to satiate any fan of death metal looking for something efficient and brutal.

Even with plenty of room to grow, Unchurch has put forth something here that’s overflowing with power and downright eviscerating in its aggression that is pitch-perfect for what this band was going for. It’s in adhering to many of the core pillars of death metal that Unchurch has propelled itself far out of the gate as the past experience of its members does great justice for what goes on in these nine tracks with the prospect of a follow-up something we should be very interesting in no matter how long it takes.
