By this point, it ought to go without saying that death metal has become quite amorphous. Depending on who’s crafting it, the style can take on an entirely different form as there are many schools of thought and approaches at play to ensure that not only is death metal sprawling in all that it has to offer, but it is constantly and consistently keeping the listener guessing. Whatever is to come next would be guesswork at best, but that is undeniably part of the thrill that this genre still offers those willing to comb its depths. Tonight, it’s from the far fringes of death metal where things are crazy and unpredictable that Mors Verum found me with their forthcoming album, and what a wild ride it is!

To pin down death metal of this sort to something specific would be to, in my opinion, undermine the sheer exploration and joy that’s to be had throughout the whole of this creation. Constantly testing themselves to see what they can bring to the table and pull off in such a fashion that one can become lost within, Mors Verum has been building up to “Canvas” since day one with this offering what’s truly their crowning achievement to date. Daring and no less than audacious for all that it challenges to summon from within, these five tracks are singularly unrelenting yet undeniably dense, multi-dimensional, and exquisite from beginning to end! Absolutely nothing feels off the table for “Canvas”. It’s an effort that knows precisely how to deliver writhing intensity this sort of out-of-the-box creation excels at when juxtaposed with atmosphere and liminal spaces that bend to the very will of the artist in question. Without a shred of doubt, Mors Verum deliver just such a performance that’s simply intoxicating to become lost within. Death metal here is constantly twisted and warped between its riffs and expanses driven by undeniable ferocity that is simply pitch-perfect. “Canvas” could have easily fallen apart in lesser hands, yet Mors Verum proves to be as talented as they are ambitious from top to bottom.

It’s been five years since Mors Verum last came to us with new material, and it’s viciously apparent in every track of “Canvas” that the time was well-spent in honing their craft to a razor’s edge to offer listeners a magnificent experience the likes of which this vein of death metal is constantly salivating for. Truly, it’s anyone’s guess as to what Mors Verum will deliver next after the overwhelming victory that is this EP, but one thing is for sure: they will execute it all in staggering and uncompromising fashion.
