Womb of Error – We Will Never Be Okay Again

Given the simple fact that it’s winter now for many of us, it only seems to make sense that now we’re seeing a bit of a surge when it comes to black metal with a mildly evocative edge. It was just the other day I found myself before Nordicwinter, and that’s just the very tip of the iceberg that the genre has been offering in recent weeks, and I’m definitely here for it! This is a corner of black metal that’s not given enough credit or attention often enough for what it can still be with it always in need of new blood to show us how much potential there is in the sound. Womb of Error may have only just joined this recent surge with what’s only its debut EP, but in no small form is this work a whiffer that’s to be disregarded and ignored.

Even now, I have to admit that I’ve fibbed just a little bit in calling this creation strictly black metal. In every sense, the core of what Womb of Error has brought to the table in the seemingly scant four tracks of its debut, “We Will Never Be Okay Again”, is undeniably black metal, but it’s in execution that we’re given a sound that’s surprisingly dynamic and quite flavorful for what many of us might come to expect from this breed of the genre. Constantly is Womb of Error writhing in its own fury, self-hatred, and misanthropy such that there’s a perpetual dark cloud over all that this record brings to the table, but it’s in taking cues from the realms of death and post-metal that “We Will Never Be Okay Again” truly takes on a life and an identity all its own. Brilliantly pulling back into dense atmospheres that are as mysterious as they are alluring, tapping into some special reach in the back of your skull that you seldom acknowledge, this EP quickly transforms itself from something that could have easily amounted to very little into an embodiment of creative freedom made manifest without ever once disregarding the core ideals of the genre of choice. “We Will Never Be Okay Again” has – almost ironically – real soul that is effortless to become attached to with Womb of Error doing a tremendous job at virtually every turn in making their debut one that’s overflowing with promise, personality, and loads of potential.

While I cannot sit here and make the claim that I’m bored with “typical” black metal by any means, I also cannot sit here and not say that this EP is a fascinating breath of fresh air. Womb of Error instantly puts itself on the map as a name to be watch for if their success with “We Will Never Be Okay Again” is indicative of what’s to come, we would do well to remember this name in the future.
