Currently, it seems to be the case that the world of metal is in a bit of an arms race. It can oftentimes feel as though bands are constantly competing against each other in an effort to see who can create the heaviest, most vile, and/or intense creation that their hands can bring to the table with the bar always getting higher and higher as each year passes. While I am absolutely here for all of it, there’s always merit in knowing how to pull back and offer a listen that is clean, smooth, and downright fascinating to watch unfold for all that it does to draw its listener in with a sound that many would consider accessible while never skimping on the rugged heaviness. Thorndale is quite new to the scene, but they already show the potential to do big things.
I remember when I first got into the heavier side of what music has to offer, acts like Thorndale are why I was able to get my foot in the door and find myself where I am today. Too often do I see people look upon names like this and feel as though they just need to be a little more intense in the right areas and then they’ll be onto something. For everything that’s been delivered throughout the fresh EP, “Spiritual Chains”, I couldn’t disagree with that sentiment more. There are but six tracks that adorn this effort, yet it’s through a clear vision of what they hope to deliver, plenty of uplifting euphoria driven by a satisfying crunch that blends metallic and hard rock influences into a modern set that draws from the best of both worlds, it’s downright surprising to find that Thorndale hasn’t been releasing material for even two years and this is what they can already throw down. Shining brightly, it’s in virtually every given moment that “Spiritual Chains” draws you ever further in with its melodies and gripping songwriting doing more than enough work to keep you coming back for more time after time with Thorndale’s sleek execution simply glorious to become captured by.
Many times over have we seen bands like this come up to the plate, but it’s been far too long since an engaging act like Thorndale has come before me. Heavy metal with stoner rock tendencies – and so much more should you dig into all the flavors at play – make this EP stand out. It’s because of “Spiritual Chains” that Thorndale should be undoubtedly proud of itself for all that it accomplished. Should Thorndale continue the momentum that they’ve gained with this EP, the sky is the limit for this talent.
