Black Magic Tree – Terra

I can understand the concept of the supposed golden years of rock music being behind us, but it is my firm belief that those who claim that rock is dead in any form simply refuse to use their eyeballs and experience what the modern blood has to offer. It’s immeasurably frustrating as there’s so much out there still to be discovered with loads of new names constantly coming before us with their own approaches that are still more than worthy of our attention even if they don’t pack stadiums or revolutionize what rock music can be. Rather, a group just having a damn good time can be all that you need. With their latest album, Black Magic Tree offers us that and so much more.

In the dense thicket that is the modern landscape of rock music, there’s all sorts of things going on such that it is simply impossible for one person to experience it all. There are names rising all over the place that try loads of new things, but it’s for any number of reasons that they never manage to breath through to the daylight and reach an audience their ambition and talent deserves. For years now, Black Magic Tree has been such an act. Downright evocative in their psychedelic blend of rock music that is deliciously dynamic in its heaviness, they’ve been an act to watch for years, but it is single-handedly with everything they’ve delivered throughout “Terra” that demands respect and adoration for what it flaunts in creative euphoria.

Never once wasting the time of the listener, “Terra” is simply electrifying! Black Magic Tree makes itself known out of the gate as an entity that knows its way around feel-good frenetic riffage that burrows its way deep into your skull such that repetition of the riff is the only remedy, but it’s as the record progresses that we bear witness to a gorgeous tapestry of aural mastery through psychedelia and genre know-how that Black Magic Tree is able to throw its weight around to great effect. All of this isn’t even taking into consideration the overwhelming joy and fun that’s pouring out of practically every given moment of “Terra”. It truly feels like Black Magic Tree is having the time of their lives in performing this album, permeating each pore of the record with an intoxicating euphoria that the listener cannot help but become wholly enveloped by. It’s a big reason why “Terra” stands out so much from the competition, and why Black Magic Tree’s cacophonous magnificence will continue to ring throughout your skull for quite some time.

Already, I will be keeping this record in my back pocket for whenever someone makes the claim that rock music has gone limp, boring, inert, one-dimensional, uninspired, or any other labels that one could think of when describing what’s going on today. Black Magic Tree may not be the savior that the world of rock music thinks it needs, but it’s with performances like “Terra” that we know good and damn well that rock music isn’t going to fade away any time soon.
