Hypoxic End – s/t

The festering floor of the underground is something that will never cease to amaze me. For every established name, there’s at least two others that thrive in the dark obscurity that the underground has to offer on its most base levels where truly anything is possible. Some absolutely revel in that vacuum, creating sounds that are as caustic and aggressive as they are compelling and indicative of that the power metal still has. Every time I venture into those cacophonous depths, I never know what I might find. Stumbling upon the charred mass of fury that drives Hypoxic End, it was clear to me immediately that this was an act that demanded investigation.

When dealing in the madness of the metal underground, it would behoove anyone to not assume that you’re going to be finding any sort of material that will completely change how metal is pulled off. Rather, you will find yourself inundated by bands that are simply doing their own thing for whatever purposes they may have, and that can oftentimes lead to creations that are genuine and authentic to the very ideals of whatever style you’re dealing in. Just looking upon the eponymous debut EP from Hypoxic End should offer you a brief vision of what the band brings to the table, but then it’s the all-consuming deathgrind that follows which completes the circle and unleashes naught but immense chaos. Across six eviscerating tracks that barely total a runtime of fourteen minutes, the might of Hypoxic End is only comparable to that of the apocalyptic blast of a nuclear warhead. Never once offering the listener any sort of reprieve as the assault is constant and unrelenting, this isn’t a record that was meant to be a joy to listen to. Rather, whatever goal Hypoxic End was hoping to achieve, be it raw destruction, catharsis of a catastrophic sort, or merely dabbing its toes in this immeasurably cataclysmal genre, I cannot help but feel as though the band has pulled off more than enough to warrant a “job well done” sticker.

An entity that obviously revels in being in a bubble that is hard to penetrate with nothing short of nuclear consequences for those who stand within its blast radius, Hypoxic End offers a textbook example of deathgrind, and it’s all executed to spectacular effect. No mercy. No relief. No survivors. Hypoxic End has only just stepped onto the scene, and already, with just a single EP, is the name worthy of remembering for what it has already brought to the table.
