Voraciousness in death metal is far from a new invention much less anything that we can expect to see leave the style any time soon. It’s long been a core pillar of what the style has long been about, yet without direction it can oftentimes come across as hollow, unfulfilling, and leaving you feeling as though the band in question could have done more. It’s all well and good to go for it in an honest effort to seek depraved lengths that are not to be ignored for what it attempts, but to succeed is a feat that demands to be heralded. With just five tracks, Burning Palace accomplishes that and much more in terrifying fashion.
A clear vision and a sense of purpose in every step you take is something that many try to tap into when crafting their music, yet few can really make it all come across in a compelling form with their personal brand of death metal. It was just earlier this year back in March that Burning Palace threw down their second full-length album, “Elegy”, yet it’s in crafting that work the band realized a swift continuation was absolutely warranted. Expanding on the narrative explored in that previous piece yet existing very much so within its own space such that it absolutely has enough power and punch to stand on its own two legs without needing assistance, “Dark Matter” holds nothing back and makes damn sure that you feel every impact that it has to offer. This is death metal that is undeniably dissonant and more than a little technical, yet never once does Burning Palace flounder amongst its frills to lose sight of its vision of mankind’s clawing toward something beyond this Earth. Writhing in its passages, menacingly mysterious in its smallest moments, and all the more dynamic and potent thanks to the intensely compelling songwriting that Burning Palace commands with magnificent aptitude, “Dark Matter” is an unassuming EP that has much to offer for those willing to explore depths that only lead to greater heights.
Confidence is something that we don’t normally associate with something like death metal, but it can be the factor that makes or breaks a band’s impact over the course of any performance. With each minute counting and its weight felt in damn near every instance, Burning Palace taps into aspects of the genre that we’re not spoiled with nearly often enough. “Dark Matter” may be a continuation of what was laid down before, but it’s in every way that these five tracks stand as a tremendous testament to the immense power that this quintet commands with true malevolence.
