Lord Elephant – Ultra Soul

It likely goes without saying that there are many, many names out there in the vast intersection of psychedelic notions and thick doom much, yet it still must be said how prevalent talent has become in recent years. Without question, there are few things that can compare to when a new name comes into the scene and make a splash with what they bring to the table. It was four years ago when Lord Elephant first came around with its flavorful debut, and it’s now with their second album that they continue to embody the raw potential many hope to tap into with this sound.

When dealing in the ethereal realms of psychedelia, it can be argued that anything is possible, but it still requires steady hands and a clear vision in order to properly capitalize on what those realms offer those who explore its depths. That is doubly so whenever you’re throwing down something of the stoner or doom variety of trippiness like what Lord Elephant threw down on its first record, properly titled “Cosmic Awakening”. This instrumental trio could have gone anywhere with their sound given the vast horizons their artistic expression and deep potential promised in that first creation. Right away, it’s obvious that Lord Elephant has kicked things up a notch with “Ultra Soul”. There isn’t so much as a single moment of this record that isn’t oozing with an otherworldly aura. Straightforward in its ingredients but never afraid to meander off the beaten path through winding rhythms that feel inspired by both classic stoner rock and old blues, “Ultra Soul” takes its name quite seriously as it’s in one track after another that Lord Elephant manages to have such a rich spirit without compromise. Far from the most innovative work of the sound, Lord Elephant instead goes for a route that feels authentic, genuine, and undeniably captivating for what it brings to the tale in heaviness, flair, and a sound that’s irrefutably engrossing.

Rather than seeking to reinvent the wheel or craft something that is unnecessarily larger than life, it’s here that Lord Elephant is true to themselves and offers their listeners an experience that’s both representative of the style at large and indicative of the raw talent that we’re dealing with here. There’s plenty to uncover throughout the depths of “Ultra Soul”. You need only to follow Lord Elephant into the smoke and not look back.
