A line-up change can make all the difference for a band trying to make their mark. Even a single member leaving can throw the equilibrium into question with there not always being a replacement at hand. Sometimes, however, things just refuse to sit still for any number of reasons. Such tribulations can easily spell the death of a band, but it’s every now and then that we’re met with a band that refuses to stay down whose core members strive endlessly to get their vision out into the world. After several line-up changes, it’s with the arrival of its first full-length album that Büddah rises triumphantly.
We have seen many, many instances of death metal trying to do its own thing over the years, but it’s not terribly often that we’re able to get a body of work that truly manages to stand on its own two legs, stable and magnificent. It takes vision and tenacity, along with many other factors, in order to bring such a work to life. To achieve such is a feat that few can ever hope to ascertain. Given the wild ride that the roster of Büddah has survived over just the last few years, it would be impressive just to get anything out of the studio, but it is with every single one of the nine tracks from its first full-length album, “Amyotrophy”, that we should hail the magnificence that Büddah has delivered in a singularly compelling capacity. Far more than riffs or mindless pummeling, this is a record that is diverse, ferocious, and downright devilish. Not so much as a single minute of this record, even amongst its smallest bits of introspection before bursting forth in another vast display of raw power, isn’t overflowing with personality and flair of a sort that’s fascinating to watch unfold. “Amyotrophy” is constantly unfolding as Büddah showcases a tremendously deep understanding of its craft as the band hurls its listeners into halls cascading through the depths of hell with the very screams of the damned playing a key role in what goes on here. Tapping into the occult for real flair and flavor, it’s along every step of the way that Büddah competently puts together a fascinating creation that’s as adventurous in its sonic exploration and it is unrelenting in its straightforward but undeniably intuitive ferocity.
Acts like this are a big part of what keeps death metal going even after decades of domination in the underground, and Büddah can sit knowing damn well that they’re indicative of what the scene is still able to throw down. Time will only tell if Büddah will ever be able to have a stable line-up, but it’s until then that the cacophonous splendor of “Amyotrophy” will remain dominant and clear as an obvious showcasing of what this Polish act is already capable of.
