Trimarkisia – The Light Keeper

There’s a particular magic about the different realms of death-doom that are hard to pin down. Given the sound’s many different forms and its illustrious history, there’s still plenty of glory to be carved out of what the genre still has to offer so long as the musician(s) in question properly channel what came before and manage to craft an experience that’s as organic and inspired as it is interesting and passionate. With its debut EP, Trimarkisia offers us a gorgeous embodiment of that concept with fantastic results.

It can be quite difficult to make a name for yourself in this style where there has been so much glory thrown down over the decades, but, like any artistic medium, all it takes is one artist to come around and show us just how much more can be found by those who truly get into the thick of it. A clear product of its influences but already doing a damn good job at standing on its own two feet without needing the lean too much on those same influences, Trimarkisia pulls of a flavorful blend of death-doom that’s as melodic and it is engaging right from the beginning. Tapping into the evocative nature of death-doom, it’s across the nearly 29-minute run time of “The Light Keeper” that Trimarkisia manages to show competency right out of the gate with the heaviness, the melancholy, and the captivating melody all coming together in a supremely interesting form that’s constantly pulling you into the storm that’s wholly of Trimarkisia’s making. Taking its time and really adhering to much of what has made death-doom a genre that’s not to be taken lightly, it has to be said that “The Light Keeper” does very little, if anything, in ways of advancing the style or putting forth a truly masterful performance, but that’s not what Trimarkisia sought. Rather, this is an exploration of a single artist whose adoration and passion for the genre have turned into perpetuation through creating something new within the confines of what’s been long established.

It doesn’t seek to stand out nor shake the foundations of death-doom, but, instead, show us what majesty the sound still has to offer as long as there are bands like Trimarkisia creating works like “The Light Keeper” who have something to say about it. This is just the beginning for Trimarkisia, and what a glorious first step this EP is.
