The sheer density of the underground is something that can oftentimes feel impenetrable by those who scour its depths hoping to find some new material from some unknown act that’s waiting to be discovered with whatever material it may have to offer us. Some entities tend to work better in the vast darkness. Where few can see what really goes on and where even fewer can find their way without fumbling, that’s oftentimes where the most compelling names begin their rise and initiate offensives upon the very light of the world. Konfession has been one such name with the last few years being quite fruitful for the act, yet it’s their latest offering that is arguably their most effective by far.

We’ve seen a seemingly infinite stream of bands coming out of the darkness to try and attempt to show us what can still be done within the vast confines of black metal with some of the finest in the genre able to consistently change the game for the better. Yet, it’s oftentimes those that stay well within the borders of what black metal has become known for that some of the most intelligent and impactful efforts of the sound are created. It has only been two years since Konfession put out their first full-length album, but it’s with the sprawling whole of “Im Baumdunkel des Äthers” that Konfession manages to make their claim known to tremendous effect. Rather than a work that gets too far in the weeds and loses itself in some lofty goal to achieve a unique brand of black metal, Konfession went on to craft something that’s both entirely their own while always ensuring that the core values and concepts of black metal of an old school sort are kept strong through every moment. Uncompromising in their power along with their artistic vision, the vast woods dimly lit by lantern come to life at the flick of Konfession’s wrist. “Im Baumdunkel des Äthers” has much to call its own.

This is black metal unashamed and unyielding as it can be in many of its different forms, and it’s in accomplishing so that Konfession reaches fantastic new heights in their ongoing conquest through the underground. We’ve seen many names come out of the darkness to add their sound to the large cacophony that black metal has to boast, yet it’s here that Konfession has crafted something that absolutely is worth your time and attention amongst an ocean of competition.
