As is the case with every style, there are certain notions and concepts that are sought after throughout the many realms of death metal. Whether it’s achieving a certain level of brutality or channeling something that’s been accomplished before out of reverence, we have no shortage of goals that any aspiring band can attempt to bring forth when trying to make a name for themselves. Personally, it’s when bands go all-in to find a deep-seeded sense of nastiness and grime in their death metal that can offer the most engaging of results. We’ve seen a number of acts crawl along the very floor of the underground to try and bring forth such madness in whatever form they can, but it’s with their new EP that Putrisect delivers in spades where plenty of others fall short.
It would be fair to make the assessment that eight years is more than long enough for any band of any sort to make wild changes left and right to make for a performance that they can certifiably call their own without compromise. Yet, sometimes taking too long and missing the mark is something that can happen all too often as the underground continues to propagate. That being said, the right talent can make anything seem possible with the results only a matter of time before someone strikes gold. I would argue that with their self-titled EP that Putrisect more than delivered and offers us the equivalent of gold as this is underground death metal at its nastiest, most aggressive, and yet undeniably focused for all that it brings to the table. Interwoven with gripping hooks and surprising rhythms that pull you ever deeper into the cacophony of madness that’s constantly swirling about the listener at a breakneck pace, these six tracks left no stone unturned nor anybody left unscarred by its voracious offensives. You can feel the grime across every riff and in every guttural wretch that Putrisect brings throughout the entirety of its performance. It’s gripping and downright dastardly for all that it is. It’s the potential of the underground made manifest with the power and ferocity simply uncompromising the moment you fall into the grisly trap Putrisect sprung in the opening moments of this career-defining EP.
While it can be argued that Putrisect doesn’t really bring anything all that new to the mix throughout this work, there’s little that one can say when it comes to the raw quality that’s at play here. Not always does one need to craft some overwhelming masterwork to get the job done. Sometimes, you simply need to know the right moves to make. Without missing a beat while striding forward with confidence and menace, Putrisect nails this performance from the moment it puts its sinister machinations into motion.
