For every new name that finds itself skimming along the very base of the underground and its many different realms, there’s always at least one long-lasting act that has gained a foothold for itself and built a fascinating reputation off it. Each style has any number of reputable acts, and atmospheric black metal is no different. Oftentimes, this sound can feel bloated or oversaturated as there simply aren’t too many bands that are able to come around and offer a performance that’s interesting from beginning to end. As one of the exceptions, Enisum has become known and respected as a name that defines what this genre can still be when put in the right hands. Twenty years since their debut, it’s with their eighth album that these veterans have yet to wane in any form.

Despite the obvious potential that a sound like atmospheric black metal always has bubbling beneath its surface, it can oftentimes be downright disappointing to see how sparce talent can be at times. The devil is in the details. Many times over do we see acts come around and manage to execute one or two factors quite well at any given time, but it’s in bringing everything together to truly resonate and connect with the listener that all too many struggle with in an effort to bring it all to life. Since the beginning, Enisum has proven to be quite different. Time has only been a boon to the Italian act, and that’s evident throughout the entirety of “Autumn Embrace”. This record is the next natural step forward for Enisum while never once compromising the aspects that have always made them one of the premier names in the whole of the genre that have long commanded respect. The very falling of amber leaves across the ground play a vital role in this captivating performance. Evocative and downright captivating for its visions and depths, “Autumn Embrace” takes on some of the finest aspects of its predecessors while always making room for its own identity as Enisum perpetuates its well-earned reputation splendidly.

It’s in the mist before the mountains and underneath an overcast sky that Ensium thrives and where “Autumn Embrace” truly embraces the soul for an experience that’s somber and chilling but nonetheless enamoring and beautiful in a way that only atmospheric black metal can be. Often do we see names come about to try their hand at the sound, but rarely do we see an act that’s as constant, consistent, and competent as Enisum.
