Unleash the Archers – Time Stands Still

There have been more than enough hybrid genres that without a doubt capture the scope of the imagination that metal bands can take. Symphonic death metal being a perfect example for that. It’s different, unusual, unconventional, and without a doubt unheard of. Another weird combination of genres is power metal and melodic death metal. Both are melodic, one by name, so I can definitely see why someone thought to combine the two together. And today that someone is the Canadian group of Unleash the Archers who have combined both power metal and melodic death metal into an album that I … Continue reading Unleash the Archers – Time Stands Still

Open Access – Over a Mountain Peak

I’ve definitely heard of combining folk metal with power metal and working out very, very well with bands like Elvenking being one of few that pop into my mind instantly. But with bands like that finding such success in that type of music then there are always other bands that wish to do the same with a genre and become something more. That’s exactly what “Over a Mountain Peak” by Polish power/folk metal band Open Access is doing with a sound that I can’t say is 100% unique to my ears, but the raw quality of it overall was really … Continue reading Open Access – Over a Mountain Peak

Trauma – Rapture and Wrath

It’s always cool to know that a band separated back decades ago, back in the 80s in this case, but have once more gotten together to bring us some classic sounding metal that we don’t get a lot anymore because of the new wave genres and the diversity that we hear every single day. Trauma have come back with a classic power metal album that is something that fans of both classic metal and power metal should find extremely enjoyable, I sure fucking did, because “Rapture and Wrath” is the absolute best of both worlds smashed into one hour long … Continue reading Trauma – Rapture and Wrath

Thunder and Lightning – Slice of Life

I’ve never heard power metal as heavy as Thunder and Lightning’s new EP “Slice of Life”, but I’m glad I finally have because this is an excellent power metal EP for any fan of heavy metal in general with a good bit of melody in it. “Slice of Life” has an amazingly smooth, but heavy, feel to it in all 5 tracks, two of which are redone from previous albums. They sound fantastic so I imagine that they were awesome to begin with but now they’re even more awesome, so that’s a plus. The vocals is where that smooth factor … Continue reading Thunder and Lightning – Slice of Life

Hammer King – Kingdom of the Hammer King

When it comes down to some kick ass power metal the first bands that I think of are Sabaton, Manowar, and Blind Guardian. Well Hammer King’s upcoming “Kingdom of the Hammer King” has everything it needs to be put among those giants: powerful feel, great rhythm and melody, and a fantasy theme that only power metal can do right (other than folk and viking metal, of course). Straight from the beginning, “Kingdom of the Hammer King” shows that they mean business and won’t leave until you release that their presence is that of power and they won’t leave until they’ve … Continue reading Hammer King – Kingdom of the Hammer King

Blind Guardian – Beyond the Red Mirror

By far my favorite Blind Guardian album because they have taken their legendary sound and just upped the anti times ten million, and I love it. They still have that amazingly great feel to them that I’m sure we all knew was going to stay when they first revealed the cover art which is fabulous. The songs are as long as they’ve ever been and maybe a little longer with this album clocking over an hour and ten minutes with 2 tracks exceeding 9 minutes! Damn! Blind Guardian just outdoes themselves which each new album for me. “Beyond the Red Mirror” is … Continue reading Blind Guardian – Beyond the Red Mirror

Visigoth – The Revenant King

Interesting cover art. Now as you’ve probably guessed already this album is medieval themed albeit in just theme and it doesn’t really cross over into the over sound and feel of the album. But I’m fine with that because the raw feel of “The Revenant King” is fast and pulse pounding with a dose of melody that just makes this album all the more great. The album also has a power metal-like sound to it but I personally don’t think that it’s present enough for me to classify this as power metal so I’ll just draw the line and heavy … Continue reading Visigoth – The Revenant King

Battle Beast – Unholy Savior

Talk about pure Finnish metal coming through for another quality album from a great band! Battle Beast’s sophomore album “Unholy Savior” is an album that has amazingly beautiful vocals from vocalist Noora Louhimo who can take her voice from a calm chant as in “Sea of Dreams” into something completely different like in the beginning track “Lionheart”. The guitars in this can go into something that is very akin to folk metal like in the track (again) “Sea of Dreams” to a sound that has power metal written over it and then it throws some thrash into the mix because why … Continue reading Battle Beast – Unholy Savior

Lonewolf – Cult of Steel

If there was ever a good power metal album from a well known band that I’ve never heard of I’m glad it’s Lonewolf because I now know that there are seven other albums I can go back and listen to because “Cult of Steel” has put this band as one of my new favorite power metal bands with that signature power metal feel to it. If you’ve ever listened to a lot of power metal you know that feel that I’m talking about, and if not then go find some power metal and figure it out for yourself. But “Cult of … Continue reading Lonewolf – Cult of Steel

Elvenking – The Pagan Manifesto

I like to think of Elvenking as the kings of power-folk metal simply because I think they’re the best at making it since they’ve been doing it longer and better than anyone for years, and their latest album “The Pagan Manifesto” is only another reason as to why they still wear the crown. This album truly is great to every extent of the word and that makes me salivate (not literally) because this album just makes me excited for what else Elvenking has up their sleeves since this is probably my favorite album from them because of this once again … Continue reading Elvenking – The Pagan Manifesto
