Great Reversals – Natural Burials

I’d like to thank the drummer of Great Reversals, Eric Scobie, for emailing me and informing me about “Natural Burial”. Never would’ve heard of this if he never told me, and I’m kinda glad that he did because this was a decent album to say in the least, however it’s not amazing. The vocals (in my opinion) seemed a little bit off beat with the guitars and drums and that kind of put me off a little bit because I like there to be synchronization among every member. But it did get better along the way so that was good. The guitars had a … Continue reading Great Reversals – Natural Burials

Varga – Return of the Metal

I saw “thrash metal” as this album’s genre so of course I went straight for it! I also imagined that Varga would attempt to make their thrash sound like 80s thrash. It was a solid attempt, but they didn’t succeed in really tapping to the core of original thrash. However, they did manage to make some good sounding thrash overall. The vocals had that 80s “charm” to them with dark lyrics that’ll get the people who like the darker side of metal going. The guitars were (of course) fast paced and they had a really good rhythm the whole album … Continue reading Varga – Return of the Metal

Forevermore – Telos

Yes. Just yes. Just. . . stop fucking reading and go listen to this debut album by Forevermore. Seriously. It’s very good. Don’t ask me what genre because I’m not one of those people who can define what genre an album is by listening to it, but if I had to guess then “Telos” is groove metal. And good groove metal at that. Not the most hardcore of music, but it’s up there in my book for bands without that death metal low tone voice. The vocals convey that sense of frustration and anger that’s being poured into the tracks, … Continue reading Forevermore – Telos

Volumes – No Sleep

Literally this is how it happened : eating breakfast, friend texts me “You gotta listen and review Volumes’ new album!!!” to which I respond “Alright”. I know that sounds pretty stupid but that’s how I handle suggestions. You say it and I’ve no choice but to say okay because I’ve no idea what the album is so I can’t deny it because I think it’ll be bad simply because I haven’t heard it yet. But “No Sleep” by Volumes is one of those that I wouldn’t have found if someone didn’t tell me about it. I really liked “No Sleep” because the … Continue reading Volumes – No Sleep

Victim of Illusion – Oxideyes

Victim of Illusion is a progressive rock band that does just what you’d expect from a progressive rock band. They have a calm, but upbeat, tone and sound in their new album “Oxideyes” that does the band a lot of justice to those rock lovers who just like that smooth sound to it that can also have an edge to it but still sounding great to their ears. I can see someone just going down the freeway in their car alone tapping the side of their car to the beat of this album. I don’t know about you, but I … Continue reading Victim of Illusion – Oxideyes

We Are the Catalyst – Monuments

In the email that came with the private link to We Are the Catalyst’s upcoming album “Monuments” also came quotes from respected and know metal magazines and Terry Nails (ex Ozzy Osbourne). These quotes gave me an idea what to expect, obviously, but there was one that made me particularly excited. Terry Nails’ of all the quotes, believe it or not. “Simply stunning, more over than Evanescence”. Well I’ve never really liked Evanescence so I thought this be a big fucking slam dunk for me. And I was right. The unreleased album is really well done in that it is … Continue reading We Are the Catalyst – Monuments

Overproof Groove – Collect and Readvance

When a band I’ve never heard of follows me on Twitter, I typically look at their description because who knows what’s gonna be in there? Could be something I like and want to review or something I don’t find good and not want to do anything with. But there were 3 things in the description of Overproof Groove’s description that peaked my interest. Here’s what it said : “Overproof Groove or OP.G are without a doubt THE #1 Groove metal band in Australia at the moment”. Go ahead. . . take a moment to guess the 3 things. Think you … Continue reading Overproof Groove – Collect and Readvance

GhostxShip – Cold Water Army EP

Before I get anywhere. . . let me just say. . . I really like that cover. Really sets the tone for how hardcore “Cold Water Army” is when you hear it for the first time. The album is quite good and is definitely up there for one of the best metalcore albums released this year that I’ve heard so far. That’s my opinion and of course someone out there is gonna be like “no fuck you that’s wrong the best album is [insert album name here] by [insert band name here]”. Happens every time. But that’s not my point. … Continue reading GhostxShip – Cold Water Army EP

Chelsea Grin – Ashes to Ashes

I have to give the credit of my discovery of Chelsea Grin to my friend Zoë who is a longtime fan of the band. She came to me one day when I was having lunch, and more or less said, “Chelsea Grin has a new album coming, listen to it. Just do it.” So I said, “Alright.” Because why the fuck not? The band sounded different and the way she described them they sounded like a band that I might like because she said they were metalcore. I like metalcore. And I imagine anyone reading this likes metalcore too. But I … Continue reading Chelsea Grin – Ashes to Ashes

Novembers Doom – Bled White

Anyone who is a veteran listener of death and doom metal know that Novembers Doom have been at it since the very beginning pretty much. They are one of the main guys that when you see that they’re gonna be at an event or whatever you know that you’re gonna get the real deal. There’s no two ways about it when I say that a lot of these new death metal bands coming up have surely taken at least some influence from the previous work of Novembers Doom. And this album is without a doubt one of their best ones that … Continue reading Novembers Doom – Bled White
