Army of Dagon (self-titled)

Mixing traditional doom and modern metal elements together is no easy feat no matter who you are, but somehow Army of Dagon has managed to pull it off with their new self-titled album pretty well. It’s not perfect if you were to ask me as there are a few ways that I think the sound could be improved, but that’s just personal preferences of mine. This album has got a very nice sound to it. It’s not very heavy like many other doom metal albums I’ve heard, but that’s what makes it sound very traditional I suppose. The vocals don’t … Continue reading Army of Dagon (self-titled)

Varg – Rotkäppchen

I’ve never heard of “wolf metal” in my life, but in my eyes it’s much like pirate metal as that metal has a pirate theme to it, and Varg’s wolf metal has a wolf-themed style which works extremely well for me. Albeit there are only 2 brand new songs on this 8-track EP, each and every song has power infused all over it and you can just feel that just by looking at that magnificent cover art. As a prelude to Varg’s upcoming full length release, “Das Ende aller Lügen”, “Rotkäppchen” is a very nice piece that has definitely made me very … Continue reading Varg – Rotkäppchen

Gateway (self-titled)

I wasn’t blown away by this debut, but I can honestly say that it is definitely a very nice album if I do say so myself. Gateway has created an album where death and doom metal mold seamlessly together even though the death metal overpowers the doom just a little bit to where it’s noticeable if you’re paying attention. By that I mean the tracks aren’t as slow or as long as traditional doom, but it still holds a slow enough tempo and a crushing beat to satisfy me in my need for quality doom. Then the vocals come in … Continue reading Gateway (self-titled)

Vacivus – Rite of Ascension

In terms of how raw and intense blackened death metal can get, Vacivus isn’t the most intense, but it is definitely up there. Their upcoming album “Rite of Ascension” contains 5 brutality well done track that sound as if they came straight from the void itself. The vocals have such a raw tone to them that it won’t take much for black and death metal fans to be drawn towards this album when it comes out. Even though I’m not big into the guitars of this EP, I can feel the power that is being unreleased through them and that’s … Continue reading Vacivus – Rite of Ascension

Cartheus – The Dispute (single)

This is a track that you have to listen to when you’re looking to chill. This is not a track you want to play to get the energy at a party. “The Dispute” is Cartheus’ single from their upcoming debut album, and while the only problem I have with it is its pacing, this song is not bad by any means. It had a very nice groove to it with the bass have a good rhythm alongside the fluid guitars that were just spot on to say in the least for the entirety of “The Dispute” which is over 7 … Continue reading Cartheus – The Dispute (single)

Audiotopsy – Natural Causes

If there was anything that got me intrigued by Audiotopsy it was the fact that two members are from one of my favorite all time bands and the band that got me into metal music: Mudvayne. I would never compare this band to them as they are two different beasts, but it’s a nice bonus. Now onto the real topic of the day: “Natural Causes”. And I have but three words to describe this debut: very well done. Not perfect. Not terrible. Very well done, and one of the most well done albums of the year for me at that! … Continue reading Audiotopsy – Natural Causes

Nothing Lies Beyond – Fragile Reality

If recently you have ever thought to yourself “damn, I want a brand new band to put a debut album that is some kick ass melodic death metal” then you are in fucking luck as Nothing Lies Beyond’s upcoming debut album, “Fragile Reality”, fits those requirements perfectly! The vocals off of this have a real guttural sound to them while they still maintain a good amount of melody that had a fantastic feel that carried on for all 30+ minutes of “Fragile Reality”. In each track there were brutal guitars that had great hooks and riffs to them that would … Continue reading Nothing Lies Beyond – Fragile Reality

Talpa – Happy

In terms of how intense an alternative metal band can get, Talpa is one of those bands that is really pushing the boundaries. The only band of this genre that pushes more intensely off the top of my head is Disturbed, and Talpa is right on their tail with their solid EP “Happy”. What is really neat about this album is that the vocals are done by a woman which to me have a more natural ebb and flow to them for whatever reason and that really allows “Happy” to become very melodic. The guitars and bass have a great rhythm throughout … Continue reading Talpa – Happy

Three Left (self-titled)

Ahh, hard rock takes me back, man. Back to just about every metal heads days before they were metal heads and all they had was some hard rock to jam out to before getting into heavier shit. Three Left is one of those bands that takes me back to those days for me. Their self-titled EP has a great rhythm to it that is key to any sort of rock album, but it also has an edge to it that rivals that of heavier alternative metal bands which makes things fairly interesting. The vocals have a smoother feel to them … Continue reading Three Left (self-titled)

Solstice Coil – Commute

Solstice Coil is more proof to me that progressive metal and rock are one of the best genres out there if you’re looking for true ingenuity and unique bands that make unique albums. “Commute” is no different. Being the third album from Solstice Coil, this really shows that this band knows what they’re doing and know how to really grab your attention without having to rely on having a conventional sound or something that’s been done a thousand times before. There’s a slew of instruments on here including keyboards, piano, fret-less bass, and some synths that really help “Commute” have … Continue reading Solstice Coil – Commute
