Year of the Goat – The Unspeakable

I remember the first thing that I thought when seeing the band name was “Satan! Satan! Satan!”, then upon seeing the cover it was more of “…Satan?…”, and after hearing a few tracks it became that I couldn’t detect any sign of Satan as far as I could tell with Year of the Goat’s upcoming album “The Unspeakable”. This was a surprising album because I expected it to be a heavy record with vocals that I couldn’t begin to understand, but this album takes more of a rock sound to it with the guitars having an awesome groove to them … Continue reading Year of the Goat – The Unspeakable

Killing Gandhi – Cinematic Parrallels

I’ve heard of band taking interludes at certain points throughout an album to provide some sort of insight into what the next track or few will sound like, but I’ve never heard of a band that does “trailers” which is basically an interlude but there’s no music. There’s just the sound of what seems to be a movie trailer and that prepares you for the brutal melodic death metal that Killing Gandhi gives to us in a solid 16-track album, five of which are those trailers. Every track off of “Cinematic Parallels” that actually is music has a great catchy … Continue reading Killing Gandhi – Cinematic Parrallels

Vanum – Realm of Sacrifice

Holy sweet mother of fucking God! I remember yesterday how I said that Hope Drone’s “Cloak of Ash” was one of the most impressive atmospheric black metal albums I’ve heard, and now I’m here to say that again but with Vanum’s album of the same genre, “Realm of Sacrifice”. Every single aspect of this album is precisely what the essence of atmospheric black metal is supposed to sound like with all 4 tracks (each are 8+ minutes) emitting the most ominous, creepy, and unnerving feel that I’ve ever heard come out of an album like this. After all that would leave the … Continue reading Vanum – Realm of Sacrifice

Hope Drone – Cloak of Ash

As a strike of absolute brilliance that I did not see coming, Hope Drone’s upcoming album “Cloak of Ash” is a 7-track piece of atmospheric black metal mixed with sludge metal that fans will be completely blown the fuck away. That’s how I was after just the first track which over 20 goddamn minutes long, and an interesting 20 at that. Every other track was 9 to 10 minutes long which is one of the things that atmospheric black metal is known for along with being atmospheric, of course. Each track off of “Cloak of Ash” is a roller coaster … Continue reading Hope Drone – Cloak of Ash

Myrkur – Onde Børn (single)

I remember listening to Myrkur’s debut album and giving it a fair applause as I liked its style of black metal that went in and out of being atmospheric black metal and just normal black metal. Now we’re back with the one-woman band’s newest single “Onde Børn” which while I thought was overall well done, it was not on the same scale of grandeur of Myrkur’s debut. The vocals were absolutely beautiful and haunting at the same time which made them perfect for the guitars and drums which were what really brought the black metal. Mixed together they made a … Continue reading Myrkur – Onde Børn (single)

Powerwolf – Blessed and Possessed

Powerwolf have always been one of those bands for me that I’ve been meaning to listen to, but I’ve never gotten around to it. But since I first heard “Blessed and Possessed”, I could not have asked for a better album to start off on as this is an awesome piece of power metal! Straight from the beginning, “Blessed and Possessed” captures your hears with powerful vocals that are without a doubt specifically made to gain your undivided attention and then lead into the melodic guitars that are backed up by the powerful drums that have such a commanding tempo … Continue reading Powerwolf – Blessed and Possessed

Double Chamber – SoBo

Taking a genre like hardcore and then mixing it with something like metalcore is a difficult task to say in the least. Double Chamber have the balls to accept that challenge though, and the result is their new album “SoBo”. It’s far from perfect in my eyes and to my ears, but this album isn’t bad by any standards of mine. In my eyes this album is more hardcore than metalcore, but that doesn’t make a real difference as I still think that “SoBo” is a very solid album that fans of any sort of in-your-face music that does not … Continue reading Double Chamber – SoBo

Elder – Lore

Sometimes a change in pace is nice, and today a change has come to my ears. I’ve been introduced to my fair share of psychedelic rock in recent months with plenty of good acts like My Sleeping Karma and Black Space Riders blessing my ears, but now Elder has shaken things up a little bit for me and made the psych more heavy and filled it with crunchy riffs while they were at it. “Lore” has 5 albums, making the album almost an hour long, and they all had an old timey sound that just sounded really good to me … Continue reading Elder – Lore

Bell Witch – Four Phantoms

First off, that album cover is fucking awesome in every single way. Second off, the doom metal in “Four Phantoms” is even more astonishing and interesting that the cover art. With a run time of over an hour long, Bell Witch has created a doom album that is pure 100% doom metal done in the most correct way that you could fathom. There’s only 4 tracks on the album too, so just imagine the lengths of the individual tracks themselves. If you’re any sort of doom fan then that must have your interest peaked right now for all the right … Continue reading Bell Witch – Four Phantoms

Trials – This Ruined World

Calling yourself a “modern metal” band usually has little meaning to me as that can mean ten thousand different things depending upon the band, but in the case of Trials and their upcoming third full-length release, “This Ruined World”, the term qualifies as some melodic death mixed with some technical element and a tad of thrash to spice it up a bit. The vocals however were far from the deep throat, guttural growls that you may be expecting. Instead, they were more “lighter” as they sounded like vocals from a hardcore band, but there’s no real point to me applying … Continue reading Trials – This Ruined World
