Hybrid Nightmares – The Second Age

As the second entry into an epic saga of the downfall of man, Hybrid Nightmares’ “The Second Age” does not lose any of the magnificence that was all over their previous album “The First Age”. In fact, the overall quality of the sound, structure, and melody of “The Second Age” has improved by a great deal with the addition of calmer, instrumental tracks in this album instead of the constant black metal vocals, guitars, and drums that while done amazingly well can get a little unimaginative at times. The best example of this that is shown in this album is … Continue reading Hybrid Nightmares – The Second Age

Hybrid Nightmares – The First Age

This album is definitely something else for black metal in terms of meaning and story telling since Carach Angren’s arrival on the scene. Hybrid Nightmare’s second EP, “The First Age” is the first of a four-album saga that tells the tale of man’s rise and eventual downfall at their own hands. This makes for an epic tale that has an amazing beginning and at this rate will have a pgenomenal finale whenever the fourth and final entry comes out. The harsh vocals off of “The First Age” are impressively done and have a real black metal feel to them that … Continue reading Hybrid Nightmares – The First Age

Chaedrist – Grandevality

Coming from Germany we have the exceptionally awesome black metal Chaedrist and their new album “Grandevality”. This album isn’t as intense as some black metal albums I’ve heard before, but the intensity is definitely there alongside melodic elements that give the music form and structure that some people, including me, find enjoyable even though we don’t mind how raw “Grandevality” is. All 8 tracks off the album are solid in every way with the vocals blasting away at your ears, the guitars going at the comfortable speed of head-banging (fast), and hardcore rhythmic drums that sound as good as any quality drums … Continue reading Chaedrist – Grandevality

Embrace of Thorns – Darkness Impenetrable

I think we can all agree that just upon the cover art that this isn’t exactly your run-of-the-mill black/death metal album, and in no way does Embrace of Thorns disappoint with their new album “Darkness Impenetrable”. Straight from the first track the album has an ominous feel to it that really made the vocals feel more harsh and intense when they first came along. Speaking of which, the vocals are fucking awesome for the whole of the album that I just couldn’t get over. Same exact thing goes for the guitars and drums with their great sound and pace that … Continue reading Embrace of Thorns – Darkness Impenetrable

Vermörd – Dawn of the Black Harvest

This album is everything that blackened death metal is about down to cover art when it comes to Vermörd’s new album, “Dawn of the Black Harvest”. The brutal, fast, and raw feel that persists all throughout the album is never ending . . . and it’s simply awesome. Just the overall sound of “Dawn of the Black Harvest” is an excellent mix of black and death metal than fans of both genre can come together and agree that this album is worth listening to as I have discovered. It has an incredibly dark feel and pulse of its own for all … Continue reading Vermörd – Dawn of the Black Harvest

Feign – Lost to Eternity

I cannot begin to explain how much I love one man bands. These are the guys who are the essence of the term “if you want to do something right, do it yourself”. And this guy who made Feign just adds more to my faith in people like him who are determined to make awesome metal, and “Lost to Eternity” is so much more than what I had expected. The whole album has that atmospheric feel to it (shocker) while also being raw and intensely black metal with the doom metal element of long songs with one running over 9 … Continue reading Feign – Lost to Eternity

Grethor – Cloaked in Decay

I’ve never really thought of what avant-garde black metal alongside death metal would sound like if it were ever made, but Grethor’s “Cloaked in Decay” is a nice answer to that thought. This new album from this Virginian group is definitely something else entirety, and I know I say that a lot but this is bullshit (the good kind). This whole album is raw from the very first moment and never ceases the brutality that can be found all throughout the whole of “Cloaked in Decay”. Even the goddamn cover art says, “Hey. We ain’t here to fuck around. Prep … Continue reading Grethor – Cloaked in Decay

Suffering – Chaosatanas

Judging by the cover alone, I think we can all agree that this is a step above your average run-of-the-mill black metal. Suffering’s “Chaosatanas” delves into the area if satanic black metal, but it’s not the most hardcore of the kind, and if you know what I’m talking about then you know that this album is not as “bad” as it could be. But “Chaosatanas” is an intense piece of work that leaves no one alive with its brutal intensity that never ceases for one moment in all of the songs. Everything from the vocals to the sound itself to … Continue reading Suffering – Chaosatanas

Hanal Pixan – In Lu’umil Belice

Normally whenever I hear a black/doom metal album I don’t expect much because a lot of times it’s not properly done and it’s just on big mess of an album. But Hanal Pixan’s new “In Lu’umil Belice” that is quite the opposite. While this album is far from a masterpiece (in my eyes, that is), it is definitely something that Hanal Pixan should be proud of because they managed to create an album that greatly suits their genres in ways that it’s shown off wondrously in the form and make up of the album. Each song is its own unique … Continue reading Hanal Pixan – In Lu’umil Belice

Unmothered – U M B R A

I’ve never thought that a 3-song album from a doom/sludge band could implement black metal into an album so well as Unmothered has done with their upcoming album “U M B R A”. All the songs off of this album sound amazing with their versatility between the three genres while also being very heavy to the point where you can head bang for this entire album and replay the whole thing over just to do it again. I’ve seen reviews for “U M B R A” that call it a mixture of Unsane, Today is the Day, and YOB; very … Continue reading Unmothered – U M B R A
