Esotera – Origin

It’s typically easy enough for me to put an album into a subgenre or two, but with Esotera’s debut album, “Origin”, I can only come to death metal as a conclusion, but even then it doesn’t feel like death metal. The vocals are very much like death metal from time to time, but overall Esotera plays in a genre that I cannot place, and it sounds pretty fucking good I have to say. The guitars had a very solid variation between being heavy and having a calmer pace and feel to them that is really what seperates “Origin” from normal … Continue reading Esotera – Origin

Morvidus – …As Shadows in the Night

Never have I heard of a man thinking to create a black metal album that combined several aspects of literature alone, but that is exactly what the one man band, Morvidus, has done with his debut album “…As Shadows in the Night”. Taking a massive influence from the Romantic era of literature, Morvidus creates an amazing blend of lyrics that take bits from famous authors of the time like Johan Christian Dahl, Caspar David Friedrich and Samuel Palme while also making interpretations of works like “Ozymondias” and “MacBeth”. He then takes those influences and molds them into an atmospheric black metal … Continue reading Morvidus – …As Shadows in the Night

Nathyr – As the Legacy Unveils

There’s nothing quite like a folk metal album done in a unique way, if you ask me. The genre always manages to amaze me as different bands implement different instruments depending on its sound and/or if it’s influential from their culture, and in this case it’s the latter of the two. Nathyr’s debut album, “As the Legacy Unveils”, is an amalgamation of progressive, death, and folk metal that are all blended together amazingly without any one genre overpowering the other. “As the Legacy Unveils” is also representative of Nathyr’s Egyptian origins as the instruments used on the album are instruments … Continue reading Nathyr – As the Legacy Unveils

From the Hellmouth (self-titled)

If you’re looking for an old school death metal album that is raw and contains enough new flavor to make you head bang for joy, then From the Hellmouth is here to satiate such needs. Albeit this EP only has 5 songs to it, that is all it needs in order to bring some old school death metal that many people have been craving for ever since too many death metal bands became generic and losing the touch of the genre’s roots years ago. “From the Hellmouth” has got the deep and guttural vocals that are pretty much a necessity … Continue reading From the Hellmouth (self-titled)

Archaea – Catalyst

I’m not sure what it is with Gothenburg, Sweden producing amazing melodic death metal bands, but I can say that I’m not even getting close to bored with that place after it’s produced great bands like Despite and Chugger. And now, another such band has been added alongside them and that band is Archaea with their debut full length album, “Catalyst”, being the exact breath of fresh air that I needed as a melo-death fan while still remaining true to the traditional feel of the genre. The “fresh air” that I’m talking about is the fact that Archaea has a … Continue reading Archaea – Catalyst

Malum Sky (self-titled)

Progressive metal has its moments without a doubt with this genre having literally dozens upon dozens of possibilities being newly made with each new progressive metal band, and Malum Sky is no different. Their debut self-titled album is probably the “softest” progressive album that I’ve ever heard, but it still retains its title of being metal with the guitars periodically being heavy amongst the steady beat of the guitars and the vocals which are smooth for the entire album. I wasn’t too keen on the vocals at first, the smoothness of them I didn’t mind, I just wasn’t expecting them … Continue reading Malum Sky (self-titled)

Black Cat Bones – False Promises & Wasted Time

If there was ever a single band to prove that hard rock is still alive and well, it’s Black Cat Bones whose debut album, “False Promises & Wasted Time”, shows that the hard rock scene of the world still has plenty of talent that isn’t ready to stop playing just yet. Black Cat Bones’ album has a real classic hard rock feel and pace to it that persists through all five tracks that are done very, very well as it is just the thing you’d expect to hear from a band wanting to have their music heard. And goddamn it have … Continue reading Black Cat Bones – False Promises & Wasted Time

Funeste – Le Triomphe du Charnier

Oh, it’s one of those black metal bands is it? One of those that you see the band’s logo and it looks either like a bunch of twigs flung unto each other, lightning going every which way, or lightning twigs going every which way. Well thankfully, Funeste is also one of those good black metal bands as this Canadian duet (duet) whose debut album, “Le Triomphe du Charnier”, is spot on what you would expect from a band from the world’s 2nd largest country. “Le Triomphe du Charnier” only has 4 tracks to its name, but those tracks are absolutely … Continue reading Funeste – Le Triomphe du Charnier

Ecstatic Vision – Sonic Praise

If someone were to have told me that there was a nice blend of a classic 70s sound mixed with groovy riffs that were chill but awesome at the same time, I would’ve been skeptical. Not out of the question, of course, it just doesn’t sound like it’d work to me. And yet hear I am after hearing such an album, a debut no less, that earns my two thumbs up with just 5 tracks on Ecstatic Vision’s “Sonic Praise”. Sometimes less is more and that is without a question true for this album because each track is a well … Continue reading Ecstatic Vision – Sonic Praise

Goblin Rebirth (self-titled)

The term “atmospherically creepy” does not even begin to describe Goblin Rebirth’s debut. This instrumental band is a reincarnation of the another band named (guessed what) Goblin, but Goblin Rebirth only consists of two original members while everyone else fills in the blanks. Each track helps depicts a unique tale: the tale of an imaginary film about the birth of an evil dwarf-like monster that sits confidently next to the classic Goblin scores like “Suspiria”, “Profondo Rosso” and “Tenebre”. Only fans of the original Goblin will get those names but that’s besides the point. Every sound and effect of this … Continue reading Goblin Rebirth (self-titled)
