Nathyr – As the Legacy Unveils

There’s nothing quite like a folk metal album done in a unique way, if you ask me. The genre always manages to amaze me as different bands implement different instruments depending on its sound and/or if it’s influential from their culture, and in this case it’s the latter of the two. Nathyr’s debut album, “As the Legacy Unveils”, is an amalgamation of progressive, death, and folk metal that are all blended together amazingly without any one genre overpowering the other. “As the Legacy Unveils” is also representative of Nathyr’s Egyptian origins as the instruments used on the album are instruments … Continue reading Nathyr – As the Legacy Unveils

Korpiklaani – Noita

Korpiklaani is without a doubt the undisputed kings of folk metal bands that play about beer. Very deep, meaningful beer. Anyways, I saw that they released “Noita” and immediately hopped onto this album because this is the band that first got me into folk metal so it never hurts to return to your roots and check out what’s gone on. “Noita” is a very solid album for its genre but it didn’t really feel like folk metal until the fourth track. For whatever reason, the first three just didn’t feel folk metal-y albeit they were nice they just weren’t impressive … Continue reading Korpiklaani – Noita

Open Access – Over a Mountain Peak

I’ve definitely heard of combining folk metal with power metal and working out very, very well with bands like Elvenking being one of few that pop into my mind instantly. But with bands like that finding such success in that type of music then there are always other bands that wish to do the same with a genre and become something more. That’s exactly what “Over a Mountain Peak” by Polish power/folk metal band Open Access is doing with a sound that I can’t say is 100% unique to my ears, but the raw quality of it overall was really … Continue reading Open Access – Over a Mountain Peak

Furor Gallico – Songs From the Earth

This title to me literally screamed “folk metal” when I first saw it. I hadn’t read anything about Furor Gallico and only read the album title, “Songs From the Earth”, and saw the cover art and could tell already what I was getting myself into. I thought that I was going to hear some pretty damn good folk metal, and I was right. Even though I’m not in love with this album I do think that it’s very good for what it is and is a very high quality folk metal album to say in the least. There was an … Continue reading Furor Gallico – Songs From the Earth

Kanseil – Doin Earde

Some people get very agitated when they cannot understand the words to a song that they really like because it’s in another language, and it this instance that language is what I assume to be Italian as Kanseil is an Italian folk metal band. But for me it does not matter what language the vocals are speaking in because I most likely won’t understand on my first spin of the track and I rely all upon how well it suits the rest of the band, and “Doin Earde” shows an amazing example of that being pulled off phenomenally. The additions … Continue reading Kanseil – Doin Earde

Desolate Pathway – Valley of the King

Never once has it ever crossed my mind to imagine what would happened if you were to mix quality doom metal with very well done folk/epic metal, but Desolate Pathway’s debut “Valley of the King” shows exactly what that would sound like and it is epic to say in the absolute least! The slower pace of these doom guitars along with the epic metal theme of a great prince going on a long, perilous journey to reclaim his throne with each of the 8 tracks telling of the trials and the difficulties that he went through in order to reach … Continue reading Desolate Pathway – Valley of the King

Vorgrum – Last Domain

I’ve always been somewhat of a sucker for folk metal, and whenever someone says that they’ve got some folk metal for me to listen to I’m the kind of guy that would slide over magically without moving my legs or anything up to you and say, “Proceed, my good man.” Although, I know the difference between quality folk metal compared to others who are barely trying to even have folk elements and yet call themselves a folk metal band, but I won’t go into any specifics. Thankfully, Vorgrum’s latest black metal infused folk album “Last Domain” reminded of another popular … Continue reading Vorgrum – Last Domain

Downfall of Nur – Umbras de Barbagia

I’ve never thought of the wonder that could come out of combining folk metal with atmospheric black metal before because it sounds so different to me that I never thought someone would have the balls to attempt it, but Downfall of Nur have done just that they’ve done it in such a way that I cannot even begin to fathom! “Umbras de Barbagia” is more atmospheric in the beginning than anything with instruments such as guitars, the flute, and even a fucking bagpipe being used in the second track, which is 17 minutes, and all of them create a truly … Continue reading Downfall of Nur – Umbras de Barbagia

Northland – Downfall and Rebirth

Folk metal has always been synonymous with bands such as Ensiferum and Korpiklaani, but now we have one band who is one the road to such fame as those bands and that is Northland. With their second helping of death-infused folk metal “Downfall and Rebirth”, Northland have proven that their self-titled debut wasn’t just a fluke, but that they know what the fuck they’re doing and the exact sound that they want to bring to the masses. Telling of nature’s vengeance upon man and the creation of another civilization out in space, “Downfall and Rebirth” is an epic tale of … Continue reading Northland – Downfall and Rebirth

Isenmor – Land of the Setting Sun

The cover alone is what gave me confidence that this as a folk metal album was definitely going to be something special, and thankfully it was. Isenmor’s debut album “Land of the Setting Sun” is such that every folk metal fan everywhere should find several things to like out of this 5-track album. These songs chant along to tales of glorious battle, the drink of the gods (that would be mead), sorrow, and marvelous adventure across the seas. You know, ancient people stuff. All the songs off of “Land of the Setting Sun” are absolutely beautiful and the melodies that are … Continue reading Isenmor – Land of the Setting Sun
