Obsidian Tide – Debris

In terms of how high the quality of a progressive death metal can go, Obsidian Tide is pretty far up there as their latest album, “Debris”, is an excellent piece of its genre to say in the absolute least. Even though out of the 5 total tracks off of “Debris”, two of them are completely instrumental and they showcase the band’s versatility and intriguing sound that isn’t stuck completely to death metal. But the actual death metal is really good as it’s intense, got a great pace, and the vocals switch between awesome guttural growls to a calmer set of clean vocals that … Continue reading Obsidian Tide – Debris

Cattle Decapitation – The Anthropocene Extinction

I remember hearing the intro track, “Manufactured Extinct”, off of this album months ago and thinking “I cannot fucking wait for this album!” Thankfully, those words weren’t said with false hope as Cattle Decapitation’s newest album “The Anthropocene Extinction” is more than I could’ve fucking wanted. Ergo, this album is fucking amazing in every sense of the term for any sort of death metal mixed with grind and progressive metal. This album absolutely shreds in just about every single track and it just made my brain melt out of my deafened ears after I played “The Anthropocene Extinction” at least … Continue reading Cattle Decapitation – The Anthropocene Extinction

Alustrium – A Tunnel to Eden

Normally whenever you see the term “progressive death metal” it’s just a cover name for some band trying to disguise the fact that they’re deathcore in reality. But in the case of “A Tunnel of Eden” from Alustrium, progressive death metal is the most perfect way to define this album in its entirety without leaving out one single note, chorus, or beat. All 11 tracks off of the album bring a distinct sound that are truly progressive in their composition while still holding that death metal feel with the intensity of the vocals breaking through and making an amazing combination … Continue reading Alustrium – A Tunnel to Eden

Piah Mater – Memories of Inexistence

Bruh . . . real talk . . . I don’t think a band, much less a death metal band, has ever tried to be more progressive and succeeded more than Piah Mater has with their late 2014 album “Memories of Inexistence”. This Brazilian duo (yes, duo!) has done an absolutely marvelous job with this album with the vocals that vary from the traditional sound of death metal to more soothing and calmer vocals. Now I know that sounds like metalcore and surely some of you might get mad at that idea, but this is far from metalcore. Far. So shut up. The … Continue reading Piah Mater – Memories of Inexistence
