Hybrid Nightmares – Ash and Bone (single)

Coming back with the third installment of their 4 part album “Ages” series, Melbourne based Hybrid Nightmares have come back to us with the first track off of “The Third Age” which is due by either late this July or early August, either way doesn’t matter as I will wait as long as I have to for this album. I still love listening to the previous two albums, “The First Age” and “The Second Age”, every single day because they have an amazingly good quality sound of black metal mixed with progressive metal to make a crushing feel and intense … Continue reading Hybrid Nightmares – Ash and Bone (single)

Between the Buried and Me – Coma Ecliptic

The thought of mixing metalcore and progressive metal together is interesting to me because I like both of those genres, and the possibilities are endless when combining the two. Well after hearing Between the Buried and Me’s new album “Coma Ecliptic” I found one version of progressive metalcore, and that version has a shit ton of piano in it. The run time of the album alone, almost 1 hour and 10 minutes, was one hint to me that this album was gonna be something else and it was. The guitars vary between being smooth and calm to more a more intense … Continue reading Between the Buried and Me – Coma Ecliptic

Seven7 – The Follower

I’m not quite sure what it is, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this band likes the number seven just a little bit. I don’t know what it is. Just a feeling. Anyway, “The Follower” is what you would typically expect from a progressive metal album with each song having a different characteristic that shows an attitude of out-of-the-box thinking that was done during the writing for this album. An excellent example would be how in one track is starts out with a very famous and dramatic piece of classical music the name of which I don’t even know … Continue reading Seven7 – The Follower

Alustrium – A Tunnel to Eden

Normally whenever you see the term “progressive death metal” it’s just a cover name for some band trying to disguise the fact that they’re deathcore in reality. But in the case of “A Tunnel of Eden” from Alustrium, progressive death metal is the most perfect way to define this album in its entirety without leaving out one single note, chorus, or beat. All 11 tracks off of the album bring a distinct sound that are truly progressive in their composition while still holding that death metal feel with the intensity of the vocals breaking through and making an amazing combination … Continue reading Alustrium – A Tunnel to Eden

Cattle Decapitation – Manufactured Extinct (single)

I have only ever heard of Cattle Decapitation until today. I’ve never heard any of their music and figured that their newest single “Manufactured Extinct” from their upcoming album “The Anthropocene Extinct” was as good as any place to start, and holy shit was I not disappointed! Right from the first sight of the cover art I felt like this was going to be a brutal single and Cattle Decapitation brought the brutality in every single way. The intense death metal riffs alongside the guttural, versatile vocals that have 3 different sounds throughout this single alone: your expected death metal … Continue reading Cattle Decapitation – Manufactured Extinct (single)

Subterranean Masquerade – The Great Bazaar

“The Great Bazaar” is a little on the odd side of metal in the way it’s performed, and you may have already guessed that from the very different looking cover art. Subterranean Masquerade is a progressive symphonic metal group but some of the vocals were very deep and guttural much like death metal so I was really taken aback because I did not see that kind of shit coming, but it worked out pretty well so I’m okay with it. But there was also a nice variety of sounds played by instruments that I cannot place for whatever reason, so … Continue reading Subterranean Masquerade – The Great Bazaar

Orpheus Blade – Wolf’s Cry

It’s always a rare occasion when I hear an album and cannot place any sort of genre by the third or fourth track, and yet the only thing I can call “Wolf’s Cry” by Orpheus Blade is just metal. This is called a progressive metal album, and I can see that in some areas, but the rest of this album is straight up simple metal in my mind and doesn’t truly stick itself to any one subgenre of metal. The sheer variety that is in “Wolf’s Cry” is shown very well with 2 tracks, including the first one, taking a break, slowing … Continue reading Orpheus Blade – Wolf’s Cry

Winterfire – The Beckoning Silence

Melodic metal always takes me back to Disturbed just because they’re my favorite melodic metal band and I listen to them on a daily basis, so they’re always fresh in my brain. But Winterfire’s debut album “The Beckoning Silence” is an album with lengthy tracks (3-7 minutes long) that impresses with each track as you continue into the album that might be the new Disturbed for some people, not for me however even though this is a very solid album. All 11 tracks have a cool, flowing sound to them that is very smooth and dynamic at once which is … Continue reading Winterfire – The Beckoning Silence

Grenouer – Unwanted Today

You know . . . when a band like Grenouer puts out what is now eight albums and are really good especially in their eighth album, you’d think that that band would be on the grid, doin’ world tours and shit like that. But quite the opposite is true because from what it would appear, Grenouer has quite the cult following of a relatively tiny group of people that have heard them before and are now fans of their progressive metal/rock sound and style as I am myself. “Unwanted Today” is most likely the ultimate album for people out there (and yes they exist) … Continue reading Grenouer – Unwanted Today

Witch of the Waste – Made of Teeth

When a band this unknown puts out an album as hardcore and insane as this it only shows that Witch of the Waste has the talent of veterans when it comes down to making an amazing album. “Made of Teeth” is what it sounds like – an absolutely raw album that is filled with brutality that is relentless in each and every song. From the very beginning of this EP it is clear that Witch of the Waste have come to make a point and that point is thaty’re a force to be reckoned with and has come to kick … Continue reading Witch of the Waste – Made of Teeth
