Malum Sky (self-titled)

Progressive metal has its moments without a doubt with this genre having literally dozens upon dozens of possibilities being newly made with each new progressive metal band, and Malum Sky is no different. Their debut self-titled album is probably the “softest” progressive album that I’ve ever heard, but it still retains its title of being metal with the guitars periodically being heavy amongst the steady beat of the guitars and the vocals which are smooth for the entire album. I wasn’t too keen on the vocals at first, the smoothness of them I didn’t mind, I just wasn’t expecting them … Continue reading Malum Sky (self-titled)

Nightbreed (self-titled)

Thrash metal has always been an oddball with so many bands trying to add so many different versions of the same sound while adding their own spice. Several have infused thrash with death, black, power, and even folk metal to bring a little extra into the mix. Nightbreed, however, is just straight thrash bringing back the speed that was known to be brutal back in the 80s and such when thrash metal ruled over every single metal scene that there was to be had. Their self-titled debut isn’t the fastest thrash I’ve ever heard in my life but it wasn’t … Continue reading Nightbreed (self-titled)

Goblin Rebirth (self-titled)

The term “atmospherically creepy” does not even begin to describe Goblin Rebirth’s debut. This instrumental band is a reincarnation of the another band named (guessed what) Goblin, but Goblin Rebirth only consists of two original members while everyone else fills in the blanks. Each track helps depicts a unique tale: the tale of an imaginary film about the birth of an evil dwarf-like monster that sits confidently next to the classic Goblin scores like “Suspiria”, “Profondo Rosso” and “Tenebre”. Only fans of the original Goblin will get those names but that’s besides the point. Every sound and effect of this … Continue reading Goblin Rebirth (self-titled)

Plain (self-titled)

Despite the band/album name making you have an idea of what the music will be like straight from the get-go, Plain’s self-titled debut album has a solid sound to it that many hard rock and metal fans can enjoy as I have. While I don’t think Plain brings anything totally new and mind blowing to the table, they do modify that feel we all know when we hear a good hard rock song/album but it’s different so that it’s not just that copy and paste music that is dreadfully overused today. This album has plenty of riffs to through at … Continue reading Plain (self-titled)

Shrine of the Serpent (self-titled)

Death and doom metal have always been one of my personal favorite genres in all of metal, and sadly sometimes combining them doesn’t work out while other times it works out fabulously. And thankfully, the later is true with Shrine of the Serpent’s new self-titled album! While only having 3 tracks to it, this album keeps to one of the key features of doom metal: the length of songs. Each of the songs are over 8 minutes long with the longest being just under 12, but that doesn’t mean they’re lacking in quality because all of them have an incredible … Continue reading Shrine of the Serpent (self-titled)

Cognitive (self-titled)

I think that just by looking at the cover art that we can all agree that this is some intense death metal. Cognitive’s self-titled debut album really shows that this band has a goal: to make the best death metal that they can while emphasizing the “death” as much as possible. And so far with this album, they’re doing pretty damn good. This album straight from the get-go comes out at you with all guns blazing, kicking names, and making your goddamn ears bleed. Each song off of this is hardcore and intense in every sort of way when it … Continue reading Cognitive (self-titled)

Burnchurch (self-titled)

Irish hardcore punk band Burnchurch have an album coming out that is by far the best punk album that I’ve heard so far this year simply because of how raw and intense it is from beginning to end. Now as expected for most punk albums the songs are “short” with the longest being 3 minutes 20 seconds with the shortest being a minute 47 seconds, but that’s hardly a problem for me because as long as the songs are well done and badass, which they are, I can find something to enjoy out them and I did in excess. And … Continue reading Burnchurch (self-titled)

Au-Dessus (self-titled)

I’ve never been the biggest fan of post black metal before because it honestly just puts me to sleep half the time. But Au-Dessus’ new upcoming self-titled album brings a little spice and shakes up the mix for me that sadly didn’t make me love it but it made the album far more interesting for me. This felt much more raw and, in my mind, more well produced than others before it. Now the only thing that really made me not love this album was that I felt like it was way too slow for my own personal preference in a lot of places. … Continue reading Au-Dessus (self-titled)

Ashes In Vein (self-titled)

I completely agree with this EP. Now, I will say that I don’t love it with every fiber of my being, but I did really enjoy listening to Ashes In Vein’s upcoming self-titled melodic metal album simply because of its awesomely rough sound and its gritty sandpaper-like feel to it that it has in each of the 4 tracks. It just sounds great for what it is. The vocals also range all over the fucking spectrum of vocals in metal and this gives “Ashes In Vein” a versatility to it that I honestly feel like a lot of albums are lacking nowadays … Continue reading Ashes In Vein (self-titled)

Countless Skies (self-titled)

I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, and I’ll say it again: I fucking love melodic death metal. It is by far my favorite kind of metal followed closely by groove and regular death. And if you’d ask me what my favorite melodic death metal bands out there today are before I heard Countless Skies I’d say Amon Amarth and Despite. But after hearing this beautiful album Countless Skies is definitely up there among my top 3 now. Their debut self-titled EP is just . . . it’s fucking amazing. I honestly cannot find the proper words to explain … Continue reading Countless Skies (self-titled)
