Every Time I Die – From Parts Unknown

The first thing that I could think of that would cover what “From Parts Unknown” is to me is the intensity like that shown by Rage Against the Machine. We all know about them I imagine, so we all know that Rage always had that “in your face” feel that allowed them to become remembered for years and years while still being able to be remembered for their style alone. I’m not saying Every Time I Die copied Rage, I’m just saying that I see a connection between the two that is really good. “From Parts Unknown” was a fast-paced … Continue reading Every Time I Die – From Parts Unknown

Colosso – Foregone Semblances

I’ll be honest I’ve never listened to an EP that only has 2 tracks in it let alone an EP that is less than 8 minutes long. Colosso, a Portuguese doom metal band, has given me something I did not expect today. It puzzled me a little bit that one of the two tracks was an instrumental for whatever reason, but I didn’t complain. I like instrumentals. To me every great albums should and/or could have just one short instrumental tracks somewhere in their albums that’ll just make the album all the more great. Sometimes they’re not short, like Five … Continue reading Colosso – Foregone Semblances

Tekilahell – Doomed

It’s always nice for small review “businesses” like me to get random messages from random bands that would like you to review their music. It’s flattering it really is and it will never not be. And as I’m sure you probably guessed, that happened once again to me today. I was messaged on Facebook by Brazilian groove metal band Tekilahell. First thought : nice name. Second thought : well there’s today’s review. And lucky me I was treated with a nice, rough EP by a band I’ve never heard before. When I say rough, I mean sandpaper rough. “Doomed” just grinds along … Continue reading Tekilahell – Doomed

Methane – Southern Metal

For some reason . . . this EP reminded me of Pantera in a way. The harshness alone seems reminiscent of “Drag the Waters” by Pantera vaguely but to me I can still make a connection even if there isn’t a connection in the first place. What make the two similar is that the songs from Methane’s “Southern Metal” have slow but heavy sound and rhythm to them that just make them catchy to anyone who can enjoy that kind of music. The vocals have that are signature to Pantera also which have that well done mix of a raspy … Continue reading Methane – Southern Metal

Every Minute Can Kill – The Damned EP

The upcoming EP “The Damned” by Every Minute Can Kill is a hardcore and unrelenting album that doesn’t stop assaulting the ears from the very first moment the first track starts going. The vocals are brutally loud and vicious that the listener cannot help but become immense in the harsh lyrics and the ruthless sound of the vocals that never let a single song go quiet. The guitars have an absolute vicious rhythm and take hardcore to the max and their monstrous sound is simply amazing because of the skill it takes to perform those notes and keep them in … Continue reading Every Minute Can Kill – The Damned EP

A Breach of Silence – Dead or Alive

Once again, another treat from the good people over at Eclipse Records have put out an album that much like Blowsight’s “Life & Death” and Our Last Enemy’s “Pariah” has legs of its own and is an excellent showcase of the bands raw talent and skill. And for those who know your albums, I know this is (once again) an album released over six months ago, but this is another album I couldn’t turn down a review for simply because of how good it is. All throughout this album I heard something very subtle but obvious that I couldn’t place … Continue reading A Breach of Silence – Dead or Alive

Mastodon – Once More ‘Round the Sun

I waited until today to go out and buy Mastodon’s new album even though I could’ve listened to it a week before on iTunes, but I’m one dense motherfucker. So I waited out and watched each day as people all of were loading up onto the hype train for this album. But finally, this day arrived and I got up, went to the music store, plucked “Once More ‘Round the Sun” from the shelf, drove home, did today’s first review, and then immediately threw this sucker into my computer and listened to what the fuss was all about. And goddamn … Continue reading Mastodon – Once More ‘Round the Sun

Blowsight – Life & Death

Before I get things started, let me take a moment and thank my new friends over at Eclipse Records for the unique access to their music for me alone to hear and enjoy for the time being. And I also realize that this album was released more than a year ago, but I’m willing to make an exceptional this time not only as a favor for Eclipse, but also because I liked “Life & Death” quite a lot after listening to it. I’m also placing this review under both the “Metal Reviews” and “Rock Reviews” categories because this is probably … Continue reading Blowsight – Life & Death

Varsity Swim Team (band)

I know. . . that band name is super unconventional. . . I stopped on a dime when I saw that and went “. . . what?” But thankfully that old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” applied itself very well today. I should have known better, too, since many bands have done an exceptional job of being successful metal bands. Like Mushroomhead for an example of another band with an odd name. Anyway, VST (let’s use that as a more brief name) doesn’t have any official EPs or albums out yet which kind of saddens me. Their … Continue reading Varsity Swim Team (band)

Upon the Water – Rise

“Rise” started off just as many EPs do : with a calm short instrumental piece with a smooth flow that has a nice transition into the second track that then bursts immediately with a lot more energy. This album had many calming moments among hardcore songs that were filled with screaming and super heavy instruments, and it sounded so good. It isn’t very often that a band can merge the two sensations of calming and hardcore energetic fits that when a band does merge them, and pull it off, some people reach a sensational point sometime during the album I like to … Continue reading Upon the Water – Rise
