Grimace – Gates of Mind

a2553682566_10 I don’t know what it is with these Northern European countries like Finland and Sweden but goddamn can they make some awesome metal! While HammerFall, Amon Amarth, and Volbeat are just three examples that immediately come to mind there are of course many many other artists out there who have amazing talent and deserve a hell of a lot more attention that what they’ve already received. Grimace is one of these unknown bands. They have an amazing sound to them that hasn’t ceased to amaze me throughout the entirety of their debut “Gates of Mind”. While I’m gonna label this album as metal, Grimace has definite rock tracks in this album that sound very, very good, “Knowing (What We Must Do)” for example is an amazing one. This album is an absolutely great piece of work that goes from metal to rock and then back to metal without losing its touch at any point along the way. The vocals go from smooth and those that are sung in hard rock songs to those that are more reminiscent of the vocals from Amon Amarth but not as deep or death metal-y. The guitars were able to do successful transitions from metal to rock as well which brings a wide variety of sounds to the album that all sound very good especially when coupled with the drums that had an amazingly sounding beat, rhythm, tone all throughout “Gates of Mind”. This album is a really good debut album and I absolutely cannot wait for Grimace to release a sophomore album. If you listen to the album via the link below and like it and want to know about a second album as much as I do, don’t worry, I’ve already asked Grimace’s frontman, Harri Häkkinen, about it and I’ve yet to get a response. But when I know, you’ll know.
